It's now the perfect moment to delve into offender healthcare and advance your career.

Join our friendly team at HMP Bristol as a compassionate, knowledgeable, and motivated Staff Nurse within the South West Prison Healthcare contract awarded to Oxleas NHS trust in 2022. This role offers a development program with the opportunity to progress to a Band 6 Senior Nurse.

Our healthcare team plays a significant role in enhancing health and well-being among incarcerated individuals. We take pride in employing skills and strategies that inspire hope for patients' future reintegration into the community. Through an integrated healthcare delivery model, we offer direct services in Mental Health, Physical Health, Pharmacy, and Clinical Substance Misuse to provide effective and responsive care, aiming to enhance well-being and promote better outcomes in the long run.

Join our primary care team and enjoy the benefits of NHS AfC employment (including pension). In this forward-thinking environment, we foster career and personal development for all staff, enhancing their clinical and interpersonal skills.

Main Duties of the Job

As a staff nurse, your responsibilities will include providing top-notch primary care services and a variety of specialist interventions for offenders. At HMP Bristol, we operate a nurse-led integrated primary care service and follow a specialist practice-based clinical care model.

You will deliver high-quality clinical care within the Integrated Healthcare Service for the prison, showcasing expert clinical skills and evidence-based nursing practices to incarcerated individuals.

A clear competency framework and timeline will be established with your line manager to ensure your personal and professional development aligns with the requirements for promotion to a Band 6 role. You will receive guidance and support from the Practice Development Nurse for BSGW throughout your development journey.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Senior Nurse Developmental Role

We encourage applications from newly qualified registered nurses or those nearing qualification status, offering a preceptorship position to kickstart your journey (Agenda for Change Band 5) with subsequent support to transition into the Senior Nurse role (Agenda for Change Band 6).

For experienced Band 5 nurses seeking a career in offender healthcare, we provide a structured progression pathway. Attached are job descriptions and personal specifications for both Band 5 and Band 6 roles, accompanied by strong backing for ongoing professional development and training.

Personal Development Plan

Expect a comprehensive plan to nurture competencies within an agreed framework under your line manager's guidance. You'll be empowered to take on increasing responsibilities over time.

Oxleas implements a Personal Development Review (PDR) and Plan (PDP) procedure annually with all employees. During the preceptorship phase, this structure will aid in formulating a Personal Development Plan within 12 weeks of your tenure commencement, with more frequent reviews than the standard PDR process, coordinated every 6 months with your supervisor and manager. Your Personal Development Plan will be crafted in collaboration with your manager and supervisor to identify areas for growth and the necessary activities and support to progress in the outlined competencies.

Summary of Evidence

Prepare a portfolio documenting evidence of your skills and experiences to assert your proficiency as a Senior Nurse, aligning with competencies drawn from the NHSE and RCN competency framework.

Criteria for Progression from Band 5 to Band 6

At Oxleas Forensic and Offender Healthcare, developmental roles designed for newly qualified and experienced nurses establish a framework supporting colleagues to advance beyond entry-level positions with a structured and fulfilling job plan. This framework aims to promote staff welfare, retain quality professionals, and afford consistent care within custodial settings.

Prior to applying for Band 6 progression, it is essential to possess relevant post-qualification experience. A competency framework, vetted with your clinical supervisor or line manager, will guide your journey towards achieving the necessary competencies for a Senior Nurse role in Offender Healthcare.
