Job Title:
Kennel Assistant

Responsible to:
Kennel manager/senior rehomers

Border Collie Trust GB rescue and rehome border collies and collie crosses throughout the UK.

The role of kennel assistant is a vital position to assist the kennel manager ensuring the professional delivery of the trusts aims.


Duties:
On a daily basis, together with other staff, ensure all kennels both rescue and boarding are cleaned thoroughly.

Feed dogs as their individual needs require and ensure every dog has clean water at all times.

Exercise, bath and groom dogs as directed by kennel manger/senior rehomers.


Carry out daily, weekly and monthly tasks in respect of cleaning of kennels and public areas are carried out as required.

Report stock levels of all necessary kennel related items.


Ensure, together with other senior staff, all new admissions are assessed as necessary both initially and ongoing ensuring that records are kept concise and up to date.


All kennel assistants have close daily contact with dogs, any changes whether they be medical or behavioural must be reported to kennel manager/senior rehomer promptly.

Deal with personal boarding enquiries, deal with admissions and collections and ensure boarding records are kept up to date

Together with appointed person ensure all matters relating to Health and Safety are checked and recorded regularly.

Ensure accurate records and accounts are kept of all cash handling.

Collections are sometimes required from other animal rescue organisations and occasionally private homes throughout the UK. For any successful applicant the ability to drive and a strong geographical knowledge of UK would be beneficial.

On the rare occasions that Trust vehicle is unavailable, the ability of the post holder to use their own vehicle would be beneficial.

Review working practises on a regular basis to ensure they meet the current demand and objectives.

Staff may be required to attend off site activities as organised by BCTGB.

Any other tasks considered necessary as directed by the Trustees of BCTGB.
Job related qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • The services and activities of a dog related welfare organisation and also boarding kennels.
Principles of dog behaviour and care.

Identification of a variety of breeds of dogs.

Health and safety practises necessary in the area of animal services.

General principles of risk management and safe work practises.

Skill to:

  • Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment
Operate and care for animal control equipment.

Utilise excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to:

  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
Recognise normal and abnormal dog behaviour.

Handle potentially dangerous dogs in a safe manner.

Work weekends, evenings and bank holidays.

Ability to work as a member of a close-knit team.

Strong customer service skills and the ability to positively promote the aims and work of Border Collie Trust.

Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintain health and physical fitness as the role can be quite physically demanding.

Qualifications:

Preferred

Appropriate qualifications in the area of dog welfare/behavioural skills.

1 year of experience in a dog service related environment.

Job Types:
Part-time, Temporary contract

Part-time hours: 20 per week

Salary:
£7.49-£10.51 per hour
