JOB DESCRIPTION - SENCO for preschool/ Co-keyperson

Purpose of Post


1 To work as part of the pre-school team to provide safe, high quality education and care for young children.

This post is for a SENCO and Co-Keyperson within a small term time setting. Currently we have 30 children on role per session, and approx 10 children on our SEN register. You must be able to recognise and provide additional help and support for those children who require it.

Experience of working with SEN children is vital.

You must be able to recognise their needs and put Individual support plans in place to help them, along with EHCP requests where required and be prepared to liaise with parents and professionals such as speech and language therapists in order to meet the targets set on the the plans.

You must be prepared to run small group activities within the setting to provide activities that will help them progress.

2 To work under the direction of the Pre-School Manager/Deputy Manager and to give support to other personnel within the setting

Pay - £10.70 for level 2 and £10.90 per hr for level 3

Responsible to - Pre-School Manager

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assist with delivering the curriculum by providing safe, creative and appropriate educational opportunities for all children within an inclusive environment, preparing activities, and arranging equipment
  • To be responsible for observations and record keeping relating to the progress and development of children.
  • To encourage parental involvement and support through the development of effective working relationships
  • To ensure that activities are carried out in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with statutory responsibilities, and to advise the preschool manager of any concerns over children, equipment etc.
  • To follow all preschool policies, including those regarding safeguarding and confidentiality
  • To ensure that the preschool offers the highest standards of physical and emotional care, health and safety, and personal and food hygiene at all times
  • Working creatively with children within the EYFS framework, as instructed by preschool manager
  • Daily interaction with children to provide range of stimulating activities to promote all areas of learning
  • Ensuring all children have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Working with range of people including school staff, visiting professionals and agencies, parents, children and families, and visitors and student placements
  • Work requires bending, kneeling and crouching for periods of time and may also involve changing nappies/toileting duties.
  • Significant elements of inside and outside work.
  • Promoting positive values and attitudes, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents involving children in line with established policy.
  • Having a positive approach to continuous professional development
  • To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children, ensuring Setting policies and procedures are observed at all times.

Skills, aptitude, knowledge and experience

Full and relevant Level 2 or Level 3 in a recognised (by DfE) early years qualification is required for this post, along with experience/training of being a SENCO within an early years environment.

  • Ability to work independently using own initiative.
  • Ability to selfevaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults including other professionals/carers/parents
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote good practice both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, whilst ensuring children, colleagues, parents and carers are respected and listened to.
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Effectively communicate with adults and children
  • Good written, verbal and non verbal communication
