The Role


Applications are invited for a talented and ambitious Research Assistant/Associate to work with Fuse and the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR), to be based within the Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University as part of our growing Public Health and Health Inequalities team.

The role will involve working across projects which focus on marginalised and minoritised populations.

You will have (or submitted) a doctorate in a relevant topic and experience proportionate to the level of post applied for in public health and health inequalities.


Required skills will include:

the development of research studies and analysis plans; qualitative / mixed method data collection and analysis; the ability to publish work in high quality peer reviewed journals; the confidence to engage with collaborators at all levels of seniority, across different regions and sectors of the public health and health care system; and a willingness to work with research partners across multiple universities.

You will be appointed to a suitable point on the common pay scale according to qualifications and experience. The post will require the ability to travel within and beyond the UK.


The post will suit an individual who is planning to develop a career in Public Health Research with a specific focus on health inequalities and marginalised communities.

This position is available on a full time, fixed term basis, initially for 12 months.

Key Accountabilities
Undertake qualitative/mixed methods data collection and analysis across projects, using creative strategies where appropriate (such as life grids, photo-elicitation, drawings, letters/diary extracts)
Contribute to the day to day running of projects
Attend meetings and other events appropriate to the projects
Carry out high quality applied research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard
Prepare papers for publication in peer reviewed journals, and disseminate findings at conferences nationally and internationally as required
Ensure that research activity and data is consistent with current research governance instructions and Data Protection legislation; ensure that research activity and data management meet the demands of new instructions and legislation as these come into effect and keep appropriate records
Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods, development of research proposals or funding bids and other transferable skills
Contribute to the activities of the NIHR SPHR at Newcastle University and partner Universities and across other relevant research infrastructures regionally and nationally
Work with relevant stakeholders including members of the public to ensure research is relevant to their needs
Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the Institute and NIHR SPHR as required by line manager
