The Corporate Communications team is responsible for protecting and promoting the Sainsbury's corporate brand.

By telling the great stories of our business you will encourage our customers, colleagues, investors and communities to believe in and understand our strategy, our management and our key points of difference.


As the Head of Corporate Communications, you will be responsible for financial communications including trading statements, interims, prelims, AGM, ARA and M&A activity.

Working with colleagues across Corporate Affairs you will drive all proactive and reactive communications across our brands and channels that support the corporate strategy, including organisational and colleague change projects at a national and local level.

You will manage property communications, as well as reporting initiatives and working closely with colleagues in Investor Relations, CoSec and CR&S.


You'll play a key role in the Corporate Affairs Leadership team as we work to communicate our plan to put food back at the heart of Sainsbury's, supported by our Brands that Deliver - Argos, Tu, Habitat, Nectar and Sainsbury's Bank.

You'll be responsible for ensuring that key milestones and the progress we are making against our plan are widely understood by media and corporate audiences and that in particular our value, quality and innovation and leading service credentials are seen as important points of differentiation for us.


You will develop a plan to support Sainsbury's financial and strategic communications, adopting the fewer bigger, better approach, tailored specifically to relevant audiences, specifically focusing on customers and investors.

You'll also manage Sainsbury's financial agency to clarify its brief and output, creating clear KPIs, a forum for regular feedback and ensuring the relationship delivers a good return on investment.


More about the role

  • Lead the Corporate Communications team and establish clear accountabilities and ways of working across the team that enables effective planning and delivery across proactive and reactive activity
  • Develop strong senior relationships across Sainsbury's, Argos and Nectar and have the gravitas required to advise and influence senior members of our Operating Board, including our CEO and CFO
  • Play an important part in managing executive leadership profiles, including arranging media training, executing interview opportunities with the media, and drafting speeches and presentations for industry conferences
  • Lead the team in showing passion and enthusiasm for the brands and in enhancing relationships across broadcast, print and digital to increase the quality of coverage in influential media
  • Responsible for Sainsbury's 24/7 press office and will lead external communications for all major organisational and colleague change projects.
  • Create clear objectives for all members of the team, based on the external communications strategy and principles, that:
  • Enthuse and motivate the team to focus on higher quality output
  • Establish clear development plans and support moves across the team to retain talent for longer

More about you

  • Experienced corporate financial communications operator, ideally with FTSE100 experience, with ability to manage complex relationships including demanding senior audiences and decisionmakers
  • Excellent, clear, and concise written and verbal communications skills
  • Proven management capabilities including people and budget
  • Strong understanding of the business environment, financial and analytical skills as well as a passion for current affairs and the media
  • Proven and demonstrable experience in media relations / issues and crisis management at a senior level
  • Excellent judgement and ability to balance the needs of the business, colleagues and external stakeholder needs and to develop good solutions using experience and creativity
  • Effective collaborator and networker able to build relationships internally at all levels and externally with a strong network of media contacts
