This post offers a unique opportunity to play a key role in the radiotherapy service at UCLH at an exciting period expansion of the service. The RT service will be acquiring a 5th Linac in the coming year to meet the increasing demand on the service. The post holder will be an integral part of the oncology team providing professional leadership and effectively managing the radiotherapy service wokforce. They will promote technical developments and ensure the highest possible standard of care for patients with cancer. As a core member of the radiotherapy team they will work with other disciplines to deliver strategic projects and the development of the service.

The radiotherapy department delivers radiotherapy services for a broad spectrum of cancers which include a wide range of common cancers as well as specialist treatments including a paediatric and adolescent workload, brachytherapy and molecular targeted therapies workload, total body irradiation and sarcoma radiotherapy. The department routinely delivers SABR for all commissioned sites as well as cranial SRT. The service is accessed by 2400 new patients per year. The Radiotherapy department has 4 Varian Truebeams, a Siemens CT-scanner in pre-treatment, radiotherapy imaging also takes place in the hospital MRI and PET-CT suites. Main duties of the job This is an autonomous role where the post holder is expected to manage their own case-load and is accountable for their own professional actions and the actions of more junior staff members. The post holder will provide professional clinical leadership and effective management of the proton service staff and be an integral part of the oncology team, providing the highest possible standard of care for patients with cancer. This post covers the proton service but close liaison with the photon service is expected.The post holder will be responsible for the operational management of the treatment floor and will have a high level of clinical expertise, ensuring the safe and accurate delivery of proton beam therapy. They will be required to liaise with other professional groups and clinical staff to ensure that care is delivered in a seamless and multi-disciplinary environment in a timely and patient-focused manner. The post holder will be responsible for identifying and setting standards, ensuring that all staff are kept up to date with current treatment techniques, providing robust training in order that they have the necessary skills for the safe and accurate delivery of proton beam therapy (PBT). They will support staff to achieve their goals through regular meetings, both with the individual, and the Technical and Operational Leads for PBT. The department additionally boasts a comprehensive brachytherapy theatre suite and a Gulmay skin unit, as well as an adult and paediatric and adolescent molecular targeted therapy service in conjunction with the nuclear medicine department. UCLH is one of two national Proton Beam Treatment (PBT) centres for the UK. The PBT department is equipped with four Varian Probeam gantries and a pre-treatment suite consisting of a dedicated CT and MRI scanner. The Radiotherapy and PBT departments delivery a joint service for cancer treatments.   • BSc in therapeutic radiography or equivalent formal qualification
  • Health Profession Council (HPC) registration as a therapy radiographer.
  • Masters level experience (or equivalent) in relevant clinical subject / management studies
  • Participation in audit/clinical governance.
  • Management / leadership course
Desirable
  • Clinical experience in pre-treatment and dosimetry.
  • Knowledge of statistics.
  • Evidence of previous research undertaken.
  • Understanding of research governance.
Experience Essential
  • Significant postgraduate experience with specialist training and knowledge with further significant experience at Band 7 Level.
  • Practical experience in planning and delivering a wide range of radiotherapy techniques.
  • Leadership experience.
Skills & Abilities Essential
  • Provide specialist clinical training and undertake presentations, both within the department and nationally in conferences and workshops.
  • Plan, carry out and analyse clinical and departmental audits.
