Established in 2015 by Bristol City Council, the Bristol Waste Company Ltd (BWC) is a Local Authority Trading company, striving to make resident's lives cleaner, safer and better.

We collect household refuse and recycling, manage recycling centres, deliver street cleansing and graffiti removal services, we clear fly-tipping and grit the roads.

BWC also offer commercial waste services for local businesses, helping them reuse and recycle more and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

Additionally, we run a facilities management business providing cleaning, security and other services across the city.

Bringing these services into BWC has allowed the company to build on the visible and financial contribution to the city whilst growing the business and significantly increasing our turnover.

BWC employs over 800 people, making 17 million scheduled collections per year, operating a fleet of 180 vehicles.

As a business, we have come a long way in shaping how these critical services operate, and embedding a culture that makes BWC a brilliant place to work, but the company wants to achieve more and that is where this new board appointment will make a difference.

You will support us in making Bristol Waste an employer of choice, and ensuring that the Company's EDI strategy translates into measurable positive progress.

The REPCo was refreshed in 2022 with a new terms of reference, and since that time, has laid a solid foundation in working with the board and executive team, providing challenge, constructive dialogue and input into strategic direction on issues relating to the appointment and recruitment, remuneration, talent management and welfare of BWC colleagues.

In appointing a new Non-Executive Director who is also the REPCo Chair, BWC is seeking to more closely link the communications flow and advice from the committee into the board.

You will be familiar with working in a multi-stakeholder, trade unionised environment, and with solid experience of remuneration to provide leadership and direction to the organisation.

You will support our board in ensuring best practice within our operations to enable us to deliver great services for all the communities that we serve.

Experience of waste, environmental or facilities management services is not essential, nor is the need to have worked in local government.

However, we are seeking someone with strong partnership working skills, who understands the unique position of a local authority trading company, and who can connect with our broad stakeholder group including the executive team, City Council, residents, businesses and our diverse communities.

The ideal candidate should be adept at skilfully navigating the inherent tensions between commercial agility, public and political accountability.

The RepCo Chair will be responsible to the company board, key stakeholders including the City Council as sole owner of the company, as well as the residents, businesses and the diverse communities of Bristol.

The post holder will be expected to commit on average 1-2 days per month to Bristol Waste Company, including board meetings, with an additional allowance for the chairing and preparation for 4 RepCo meetings per year, which may include working with the Chair, Managing Director, Director of People and other members of the executive team, engaging with partners and stakeholders.

We expect the post holder to work agile including face-to-face meetings and site visits, as well as meetings conducted online.
