Background

In recent years, the rules designed to safeguard against the spread of disinformation and misinformation and to promote healthy political debate have failed to keep up with the pace of new communication technologies.

Reform In Political Advertising is a non-profit and non-partisan organisation campaigning for the modernisation of the rules for political advertising. A key area for our campaign is to ensure that rules are put in place for factual claims (or as the public would say rules to prevent lies) in political advertising.

The 2019 general election was certainly a good case study that demonstrated the urgent need for reform. Our review of pollical advertising over that period was widely reported in the media which you can read here.

Since our campaign launched there has been significant progress towards our campaign objective including the Advertising Standards Authority for the first time stating in its annual report that "political advertising must be regulated" and the House of Lords Democracy and Digital Technologies Committee that we gave evidence to recommending all the stated aims of our campaign. We also had 6 London Mayor candidates sign up to an ad code we put together to plug the gap in regulation including The London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Green and Liberal Democrat candidates.

We are looking to significantly develop the impact of our campaign in the run up to the snap 2024 general election. One of the key campaigning tools we conduct is documenting misleading ads to demonstrate the scale of the problem which is why we are looking for 2 fact checkers to work with our small but passionate team in the run up to the general election.

We are run by unpaid volunteers which is why this is a voluntary role.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough research of election ads that we are passed from volunteers to verify the accuracy of factual claims and statements within written content.
  • Proactively source misleading ads using the platforms' ad libraries (primarily on Meta and Google).
  • Cross-reference information with reliable sources to ensure its credibility and relevance.
  • Collaborate with others in the organisation to clarify and authenticate complex information.
  • Identify and flag potential inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or misleading information for further review.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of fact-checking processes and findings.
  • Uphold ethical standards and adhere to our established guidelines for fact-checking.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for truth, accuracy, and integrity in politics
  • A "nice to have" (although not essential) would be experience in fact-checking, research, or investigative reporting.
  • An interest in and awareness of key political issues across the parties.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to critically evaluate information and sources.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in verifying facts and data.
  • Proficiency in conducting online research and navigating various sources, including databases, archives, and academic journals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
