Job summary

The Trust wide Clinical Lead for Self-harm and Suicide Prevention role is a Trust-wide role which co-ordinates and leads Derbyshire Healthcare approaches to suicide prevention, at both strategic and clinical levels. A key part of this role is to be responsible for the implementation of the Trust's Suicide prevention strategy and promoting this initiative, reporting to the Medical Director.

Main duties of the job

The role involves embedding suicide prevention principles across clinical pathways, in service developments and strategic decisions across the Trust, and in working with partners at local, regional and national levels. Working closely with multiple stakeholders in a variety of clinical and corporate settings to develop a strategic approach to suicide prevention that encompasses and supports the organisation in a whole system approach.

The role will act as the overall lead for self harm and suicide prevention across the Trust. Aiming to develop and co-ordinate and implement the Trust strategy on self harm and suicide prevention at clinical, operational and strategic level.

The role will work closely with the patient safety team and clinical quality team in implementing learning lessons and improving patient outcomes relating to self harm and suicide prevention.

Job responsibilities

Chair suicide prevention strategy group meetings, engaging a whole range of stakeholders from across the Trust.

To coordinate and lead in working groups relating to suicide prevention across the Trust.

To act as a key member of the Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention steering group and to work closely with other partners in the Countywide suicide prevention strategy.

To report on activity and performance relating to suicide prevention- both internally within the Trust, and externally.

Work in co-production with front-line clinical staff, service users and families

Maintain a detailed, critically evaluated and up-to-date knowledge of policy, research and evidence based to inform best practice around suicide prevention.

Analyse and disseminate key messages from the yearly report of the National Confidential Enquiry into Suicide and Safety

To maintain links and meet with other suicide prevention leads regionally and nationally. To attend relevant meetings and network events as needed.

To provide expert advice, training, and consultation across the Trust, both at strategic and clinical levels in relation to suicide prevention and self-harm.

Provide expert advice around the implications of service changes or transformations from the perspective of suicide prevention.

Oversee planning, delivery, and evaluation of suicide prevention training in the Trust to ensure that this meets recommendations and need and is in line with the Trusts strategy and approach to suicide prevention.

Analyse qualitative and quantitative local data in relation to self-harm and suicide and use this to inform strategy.

To review suspected suicides and related incidents to support those involved, enable an understanding and learning from incidents, including immediate actions and themes to inform ongoing and future work.

Work closely with colleagues in patient safety to ensure a real-time surveillance approach to learning from incidents relating to suspected suicides.

To work in partnership with patient safety colleagues to develop effective mechanisms to learn key lessons from suicide-related deaths. To develop and deliver training related to this.

To work with data to improve understanding of data relating to suspected suicides and inform Mortality Surveillance/Learning from deaths.

To provide supervision and support to colleagues in situations relating to working with suicidality, suicide, and suicide bereavement.

To oversee a review of risk assessment practices in line with latest evidence pertaining to suicide prevention, including a strategy for the systematic use of safety plans.

To co-produce minimum standards for the assessment, formulation, and reduction of risk in relation to suicide and self-harm in clinical pathways, taking into account best practice guidance and available evidence.

To develop a comprehensive strategy to support staff in the event of a patient suicide.

To work with colleagues in Employee Relations to develop a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention as an employer, both for staff health and wellbeing, and in developing a just and restorative culture.

To develop a communications plan and provide regular communications relating to suicide prevention using a range of communication methods.

To develop a yearly Communications campaign to promote World Suicide Prevention Day
