***We are looking for 2x 32hr Support Worker (Driver Essential) who are passionate about supporting people with a learning disability in the South Shields area.

  • You must be able to work any daytime shifts including weekends and there are sleep in's at the service.

We have a new exciting opportunity to support an 80+ year old gentleman in his own home in South Tyneside with 1:1 support.

This gentleman requires support with communication, being out and about in the community, with all health needs, attending appointments, preparing meals, personal care and all aspects of daily living such as domestic tasks, medication administration and finances.

The gentleman has dementia and also requires support in managing his behaviours. At times, he can get confused so requires staff to be calm, patient and understanding.

Staff have support plans and risk assessments to follow so that he gets the support he needs enabling us to manage these effectively.

This man has his own vehicle which staff would be required to drive.

He enjoys going out every day for a drive whether this be along the sea front or a day trip out.

He has recently been supported to go on holiday, which he really enjoyed.

He has a love for animals especially dogs and enjoys nothing better than just feeding the birds in the garden.

It is important we support him to live a meaningful life, developing his social connections and new activities.

His family are very important to him especially his brother who he speaks with via Skype each week with staff support.

With patience, compassion, and lots of motivation you will find this role very rewarding. Shifts are on a rota basis and include weekends and waking nights.


Mencap try to ensure continuity of care to the people we support, but at times, you may be required to work within any other Mencap service.

You will be required to work daytime hours and waking nights, including bank holidays and weekends within a large team over 3 services during transition and annual leave periods.

  • Planning healthy meals. Following Eating guidelines and modifying foods.

  • All health monitoring and appointments.
  • Holidays/Breaks away
