Residential Child Care Worker

Together with the management team be responsible for shaping and delivering the residential home's Statement of Purpose.

To provide high quality care services that supports the needs of the children by being an advocate for their well-being and to provide strong and nurturing relationships to children.


  • Specifically take account of the choices, needs and wishes of each child, involving children in their own plans and day to day decisions where appropriate.
  • Take personal responsibility for learning about each child and the way their childhood experiences affects them; for 'listening' to the individual; and for reflecting on own practice to continuously develop their own knowledge and skills.
  • Ensure positive professional relationships are maintained with children, families and other professionals at all times and to maintain young people's confidentiality at all times.
  • Support children through their journey in care into independence.
  • Attend team meetings, supervisions and appraisals and actively take a role in developing own continuous professional development.
  • Work with managers to identify needs and access relevant learning and development opportunities and share that learning with others. Take responsibility to attend mandatory courses which are required to fulfil the role.
  • Understand the importance of accurate and professional recording of children's working files/plans. Using these effectively and professionally to inform practice on a daily basis.
  • To ensure, with the support of the Registered/Deputy Managers, you understand your role working within the service and in line with quality standards and Care Inspectorate Wales regulations.
  • Working as part of a team, sharing responsibility fairly and being supportive of others.
  • Support young people in their daily lives by:
Assisting them to develop & maintain a high standard of personal hygiene & appearance.

Supporting young people to make appropriate choices regarding their nutritional needs.

Administering medication in accordance with their needs and taking full account of the Medication Policy and Procedures.

Accompanying them to the dentist, doctor and all other appointments as appropriate.

Reporting to managers any concerns regarding the young people's welfare including health and safety issues in the home.


Actively encouraging and supporting leisure and meaningful activities both inside and outside of the home, in accordance with individual child's interests, choices and needs.


Being responsible for the health and wellbeing and safety of children during excursions which could include overnight stays of up to one week.

Facilitate support in relation to the transportation of children e.g. public transport, car.


Ensuring the home environment is secure, clean and well presented, undertaking domestic chores and relevant health and safety checks as necessary.

Adhering to all safeguarding requirements and any procedures aimed at child protection.

Using positive intervention support planning to support children in managing their own challenging behaviours.

Additional Information

  • Post holders must be willing and able to work flexibility to a varied shift pattern including sleepin duties, weekend/Bank Holiday working and to work across different locations. Also willing and able to escort and attend holidays with children which will include overnight stays of up to one week.
  • Outcomes and accountabilities may be amended to take account of changing trends in social care, relevant legislation and together with Employment Law.

General Accountabilities

  • So far as is reasonably practicable, the post holder must ensure that safe working practices are adopted by employees and in premises/work areas for which the post holder is responsible to maintain a safe working environment for employees and service users. These are defined in the Corporate Health, Safety and Welfare Policy, departmental policies and codes of practice
  • Work in compliance with the Codes of Conduct, Regulations and policies of Hanbury Care.
  • To model and promote good equalities practice and value diversity across the service.
  • Ensure that output and quality of work is of a high standard and complies with current legislation / standards.
  • Ensure that all mandatory training is undertaken as required. For example
  • Hanbury Care Induction, Health and Safety, Equalities, Safeguarding Children. Please note this is not a comprehensive list.
