Widener University is currently seeking a Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life in the Office of Student Engagement. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Engagement, this role provides strategic leadership to the Fraternity and Sorority Life Community including 400+ students, 19 chapters, and four governing councils. The Director is responsible for the supervision, program development, leadership development, and risk management operations associated with all fraternities, sororities, and affiliated student leaders at Widener University. The Director will directly supervise 1 Graduate Assistant through the Widener University Graduate Assistantship Program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to) :

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan and vision to support the Fraternity and Sorority Life Community using best practices in Higher Education that will promote community engagement, collaboration inside and outside of the FSL community, and instill a sense of belonging.
  • Promote the development of chapters and members within the FSL community by conducting training sessions on chapter operations, leadership and character development, fiscal management, recruitment, risk management, program evaluation, accountability, and career skills competencies.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the Fraternity & Sorority Life Community in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Develop and facilitate a bi-annual FSL Executive Leaders Retreat, monthly Chapter President Roundtable workshops, and developmental 1-1 meetings with chapter leaders, as needed.
  • Educate and hold all fraternal organizations accountable to university expectations as indicated in the Student Handbook, Code of Conduct, and national organization policies and standards.
  • Serve as the primary advisor for the Interfraternity Council, College Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Council of Independent Organization, Order of Omega Honor Society, and any other related student groups.
  • Serve as a liaison between campus chapters, national organizations, campus advisors, and alumni advisors to maintain strong working relationships for the benefit of the entire FSL community.
  • Assess chapter accomplishments, compliance, and continuous improvement through the administration of the Points of Pride Chapter Development Program.
  • Supervise all procedures and systems relative to authoring and maintaining the appropriate detailed files, records, and reports related to the fraternity and sorority life community.
  • Ensure full compliance with all student engagement platform requirements by reviewing and approving all event requests, organization portal updates, and form submissions affiliated with the Fraternity & Sorority Life Community.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Residence Life and Campus Safety Department to ensure special interest housing is obtained and acceptable communal living standards are managed in each facility for each chapter residing in the space.

Secondary duties:

  • Work collaboratively with the professional staff in the Office of Student Engagement to plan and implement signature department-sponsored events including the Student Involvement Fairs, Student Leadership Awards, Organization Leadership Retreats, and other office or campus initiatives
  • Promote and support evening, late night, and weekend programming initiatives by sharing covering with other professional staff members in the Office of Student Engagement
  • Assist the Assistant Dean of Students with the coordination and implementation of comprehensive orientation and leadership programs for undergraduate students
  • Assist the Assistant Dean of Students with all departmental or divisional strategic planning, goal setting, data collection, and assessment as needed throughout the academic year
  • Work collaboratively with other campus departments to bring educational programming to campus that will provide educational or cultural dialogue to the community
  • Perform other duties as needed and related to the functions of the Office of Student Engagement

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required) :

Required:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 3 – 5 years of professional work experience in student organization development specifically working with fraternities, sororities, and campus programming
  • Affiliation with an international or national Greek-lettered organization
  • Able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of fraternity and sorority community management and experience advising a collegiate-level fraternity and sorority system
  • Thorough understanding of student development theory
  • High level of energy and initiative, and willing and able to work with minimal supervision while contributing positively to a cooperative, high-functioning team
  • Must be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Demonstrated track record of actively promoting diversity and inclusion of all students
  • Experience with creating and facilitating programming, promotional or informational materials, public speaking, and leading training programs and workshops
  • Experience with budget management as it relates to student organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of privileged information and perform duties that require tact, independent judgment, diplomacy, and discretion
  • Demonstrated organization and planning skills; strong follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure completion of goals and objectives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as skill in presenting effectively to various audiences and facilitating group processes
  • Superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively interact with campus constituents and maintain a strong rapport throughout the year
  • Flexibility to regularly work evenings and weekends to achieve objectives of the position; ability and willingness to travel on behalf of the university, including trips requiring overnight stays as needed
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and the ability to analyze components and arrive at a logical course of action while knowing when to ask for assistance or direction
  • Ability to assess students' needs and resolve student leadership, programming, or group dynamic challenges by adapting individual programming and leadership skills to the campus culture
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, desktop publishing, and internet browser and search software

Preferred:

  • 4 – 6 years of professional work experience in student organization development specifically working with fraternities, sororities, and campus programming
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multicultural fraternities, sororities, and governing councils
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Student Affairs, with student organizations, programming, and a commitment to professional standards of behavior
  • Prior experience in creating effective event marketing and promotions around student activities and events via social media platforms directly to students
  • Knowledge of best practices and in Higher Education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

  • Evening and weekend hours are required outside of normal responsibilities
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent walking, standing and climbing stairs
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Ability to be mobile between workstation and other buildings on campus
  • Some travel is required as related to the programs in the Office of Student Engagement
