Job Summary

The Maternity Link Support Worker (MLSW) focuses on supporting the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) to implement plans for improving outcomes for pregnant women from diverse backgrounds, offering translation services in multiple languages like Urdu, Bengali, Arabic, Pashto, Somali, Romanian, Patois, and Tigrinyan. The role involves clear communications, advocacy, Continuity of Carer, digital inclusion, and health promotion and literacy support. Collaboration with Maternity Teams, local third sector organizations, and Family Hubs is essential to provide comprehensive care in a community setting.

Main Duties of the Job

  • The Birmingham & Solihull United Maternity & Newborn Partnership (Bump) supports maternity care across the LMNS, focusing on equity, equality, and better outcomes for mothers and babies from diverse ethnic groups and deprived areas.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health Care or equivalent
  • Key Skills in literacy and numeracy

Desirable

  • GCSE pass in English Language or equivalent
  • Training in Making Every Contact Count and Motivational Interviewing
  • Certifications in British Sign Language, Community Interpreting, or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Understanding of health outcomes for ethnic minority women during pregnancy
  • Experience in healthy lifestyle and behavioral change
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Experience supporting women from ethnic minority backgrounds with social needs
  • Previous work with pregnant women and healthcare in the NHS
  • Training in baby-friendly standards and audit skills
  • Skills in working with vulnerable patients

Professional/ Managerial/ Specialist Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent data entry skills

Desirable

  • Experience with patient records management systems
  • Certification in European Computer Driving License or equivalent

Personal Skills / Abilities and Attributes

  • Strong written and computer communication skills
