The Critical Care Unit Receptionist is an essential role for enabling the smooth and efficient running of the Critical Care Unit by providing receptionist, clerical and administrative support.

The receptionist is the first contact for visitors to the unit, creating that all important first impressions. As such, we are looking for someone who can provide a welcoming and empathic approach for our visitors.

The Intensive/Critical Care Unit Receptionist is an essential role for enabling the smooth and efficient running of the Intensive/Critical Care Unit by providing receptionist, clerical and administrative support.

The receptionist is the first contact for visitors to the unit, creating that all important first impressions. As such, we are looking for someone who can provide a welcoming and empathic approach for our visitors.


The role is based on the Intensive/critical care unit reception and will involve maintaining secure access to the unit, managing telephone calls, and providing support and direction to visitors.

Administrative duties will include maintaining patient data on hospital systems, administrative elements of admission and discharge, maintaining patient records, and supporting nursing and medical personnel.

The role will work alongside our Operations Manager for Critical Care & Burns, but it is essential the post holder is able to work independently and unsupervised.

  • Act as a receptionist and provide clerical and administrative support for the Intensive/Critical Care Unit.
  • Provide an accurate, helpful and courteous telephone enquiry service to parents, GPs, external health professionals, other outside agencies and hospital staff.
  • Maintain security on the unit by screening all visitors.
  • Provide support for all grades of ward staff i.e. nurses, doctors by undertaking general clerical and admin duties, i.e. answering the telephones, taking messages.
  • Make transport arrangements as necessary for specimens and patient transfers.
  • Address verbal complaints and attempt resolution, referring where appropriate.
  • Linking to PALS re logging informal complaints and compliments (thank you cards).
  • Maintain general tidiness of ward reception and visitors kitchenette area.
Service Improvement

  • Implement and train others around new policies, procedures and guidelines with regard to Cerner administration, including patient encounters and slices.
  • Assist on any adaptations with regard to ICNARC, ensuring all relevant patient activity is identified and recorded via Acubase in absence of ICNARC lead.
  • Assist in coordinating the collection of accurate and reliable data, by liaising with ICNARC lead.
  • As required, work with those responsible in developing the unit by completing audits, sharing good ideas and best practice.
  • Demonstrate a personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources ensuring use is optimised.
  • Adapt own working practice as agreed and to time, seeking support as necessary.
  • Assist Operations Manager in the collection of data as directed.
  • Assist nurse coordinator in ensuring safe staffing levels are maintained for all shifts.
  • Inform the relevant departments of the admission of any private patients or overseas visitors.
  • To put patient care at the heart of work to improve outcomes and service delivery.
