Purpose of the position


The Green Futures Intern will be part of The Marlow Cheese Co team, primarily focused on assisting with cheese making.

You will learn the process of cheese making and how to produce a variety of different cheeses.

In addition, you will complete other tasks related to the assistant role such as helping at farmers markets, essential food hygiene training and supporting with business administration.


Scope of job


We are a small, family run business based in the picturesque town of Marlow who pride ourselves on working with local dairy farmers, allowing us to source our milk locally to create our delicious cheeses.

You will be working directly with our team at our small and friendly base in Marlow.

Outline of duties:

  • Learning about the process of cheese making.
  • Assisting with making a variety of cheeses.
  • Cheese maintenance which includes, turning cheeses, salting them, painting them etc.
  • Learning about food hygiene and gaining a food hygiene certification.
  • Packaging cheeses and supplying orders.
  • Selling at farmers markets, including face to face sales
  • Cleaning.
  • Business administration.

Time with Feedback


In addition to working with your host organisation, you will spend a proportion of your time working with other young people, receiving additional training and development with Feedback and external facilitators.

This time will be spent learning more about the environmental and ecological crisis and how it relates to the food system; it will also include elements of activism training, employability skills workshops, leadership & project management training and bespoke support based on your professional and personal development.

You will also access 1:1 additional support and mentoring to guide you through the process.

Who we are looking for:

The person should:

  • Be a team player with a demonstrable positive, 'can do' attitude and ability to work in a team.
  • Interest in learning about cheese production and gaining knowledge about the products.
  • Someone who feels they are physically fit, as it can be quite hands on at times.
  • Willingness to learn about food hygiene practices used in the food industry.
  • Confident, professional, polite and helpful when engaging with customers at farmers markets. Able to use knew product knowledge to inform customers about the products.
  • Adaptable and happy to get stuckin with various areas of the business including administration, cleaning, interacting with customers as well as making the cheese.
  • Able to work in a production environment on a rural site.
  • Hardworking and keen to learn

Eligibility:

  • You must be legally entitled to work in the UK
  • You must not currently be enrolled on a higher education degree (undergraduate or postgraduate).

TRAVEL TO WORK:
We recognise that travelling to your placement via public transport may present challenges.

We are committed to ensuring that travelling to placements will not be a barrier for people, and are happy to discuss ways to make this work.

You may be able to access a bursary scheme to support the purchase of a bicycle or other low carbon methods of travel to work.

This placement is five minutes from a public bus stop (Wycombe to Reading Route)

Host Organisation - About us
We are a small, family run business based in the picturesque town of Marlow who create award-winning artisanal cheeses.

We pride ourselves on working with local dairy farmers, allowing us to source our milk locally to create our delicious cheeses.

We sell our produce online via The Marlow Cheese Co website and at local farmers markets.

Position in organisation
You will be working directly alongside our team.

You will be expected to get involved in all aspects of the business from making cheese, packaging and selling cheese to learning about the daily administration of the business.
