We will provide you with on-the-job opportunities to develop your skills across a wide variety of flood related technical skills, with possible access to higher education or apprenticeships.

Working closely with colleagues, other teams and organisations, you can expect to be involved in any of the following:

  • Collection, analysis and interpretation of data
  • Flood risk mapping
  • Working closely with customers and partners
  • Taking part in incident management when flooding occurs
  • Providing advice, guidance and training for less experienced officers.
  • Providing technical support to help deliver a variety of flood defence schemes.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • The SHEC PSO Team work with and support local Risk Management Authorities and communities to design, develop and deliver flood risk management assets to reduce flood risk. We compile, manage, and use the best available evidence through our mapping, modelling and data work to inform our longterm plans and investment programme. We provide advice on Flood Risk Assessments for development proposals and issue Flood Risk Activity Permits.


Experience/skills required
  • We are looking for a person who is proactive, with the ability to identify risks and resolve issues.

Through your experience you will demonstrate:

  • A good understanding of the impact of flooding.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with customers.
  • A good working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • An understanding of the Environmental Permitting and Planning Applications processes, in relation to Flood risk.
  • Delivery of work by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information.
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team to achieve planned outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills to deal with a diverse range of people.
  • Flexible to the needs of the organisation and open to new ways of working.
  • A positive and adaptable attitude, who responds well to constructive feedback.
  • Experience of working with others to deliver specific projects or initiatives.
