Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a 12 month fixed term Tier 2 Doctor post within the Neonatal Unit at Arrowe Park Hospital.

The post will normally be whole-time but consideration will be given to candidates unable to undertake whole time duties for personal or health reasons

The current tier-2 rota is a full shift rota with 7 doctors/ANNPs on the rota. There will be weekend and on-call allowance appropriate to the nodal point at which the post-holder is paid.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will share the work load and will have the same training opportunities as the specialist trainees in paediatric rotations. The post-holder is accountable to the consultant(s) for the provision of services & other clinical duties in neonatal health (inpatient and outpatient services) to support the contractual commitments of the Trust to service purchasers. The post-holder ideally should have up to date NLS (neonatal life support) qualification (or equivalent). If unavailable at the time of interview, provision will be made to get the post-holder obtain NLS certification locally before commencing the post. The post- holder is rotated through various areas such as the intensive care unit, SCBU, labour ward cover or postnatal wards. There will be a mix of junior and senior trainees, along with ANNPs during the day. At night hours, there shall be one higher level trainee and one junior level trainee and ANNP/APNP on-site for each of paediatrics and neonates. There is no cross-cover between the Neonatal and Paediatric teams. There is on site consultant cover from neonatal consultant until 2100 hrs and non-resident support 24/7. The post-holder may be required to prospectively cover clinical duties of colleagues in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Brief descriptions of clinical duties while in this post include:

Contribution to the effective running of the acute tertiary neonatal service Attendance at deliveries and provision of basic new-born life support and assistance with transition for babies in need Admission and hour to hour support of babies in the neonatal unit Immediate investigation / acute ventilator management of babies in the neonatal unit Basic practical procedures including IV cannulation, arterial line sampling, capillary blood sampling, lumbar puncture Essential neonatal procedural skills including airway support, umbilical vessel catheterisation, longline insertion Gain competence in intubation of term babies, with training and supervision by senior medical colleagues and ANNPs Recording progress, observations and examinations in electronic case notes and badger database Presentation of progress on ward rounds after clinical review of babies in intensive care, high dependency care, special care and transitional care areas Communication with other professional groups and parents appropriate to level of experience Obtain training, experience and maintenance of skills Routine new-born examinations and reviews checks prior to discharge of babies from the postnatal ward and transitional care unit

It is a requirement for this post that a DBS check is undertaken and that you register with the online DBS update Service. This is an expressed term of your contract of employment with the Trust. You will need to register on the online service on completion of the initial DBS check. This must be completed within 30 days of the certificate issue date. Further information and guidance can be found at Please be aware that if you fail to register with the update service within 30 days of receiving your DBS certificate, you will be charged for an additional DBS application and will be required to register with the update service within 30 days of receiving the new certificate.

On an annual and ad-hoc basis, if applicable, the Trust will complete a status check to review any additional information that has been identified since the original certificate was first issued. As part of the pre-employment process you will need to provide the Recruitment Team with the ID update service number for the portable DBS check. This information can be found on the original DBS certificate and must be provided to the Recruitment Team before your first day of starting with the Trust. This should be sent by email to .

Please also note that you will be charged for the DBS certificate in 3 equal instalments from your first 3 salary payments. In the event that you withdraw from this post after your DBS disclosure form has been sent to the DBS or the Trust withdraw the offer of this post due to non-disclosure of information you will be invoiced by the Trust Finance Department to reclaim these costs. Once you have been registered with the update service you will be required to pay £13 per annum to use the update service which is a fundamental requirement of your employment with Wirral University Teaching Hospital.
