An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with lived experience of receiving care in secondary mental health services to join our service as a peer support worker (PSW).

Peer Support is based on the recognition that there is no better person to support the path towards recovery than someone who has walked the same path as that individual.

This peer support worker role will be an integral part of our Cannock and Stafford Mental Health Support Teams.

We are seeking an individual with lived experience of accessing CYP Mental Health Services, to support and work alongside children and young people accessing MHSTs, on a one-to-one and group basis to explore peoples own goals and personalised recovery.


Co-production is at the heart of community mental health transformation and therefore will be vital element within the role of peer support worker, in taking forward the development of Mental Health Support Teams and the wider lived experience practice and peer support offer within MPFT.

The PSW will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users in order for them to regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process.


Peer Support Workers engage with mental health service users to show empathy, share experience, inspire hope and promote recovery with the aim of assisting service users to gain and maintain independence in the community.


PSW work as part of the mental health support team and work in collaboration of other key stakeholders involved in the delivery of care in the community.

Senior PSW have an area of special interest (eg learning support, Social media awareness, sports, art work, group work, mentoring of other peer workers etc) and use this experience/expertise to the benefit of service users

  • To establish a supportive and respectful relationship with service users
  • To work primarily in direct work with service users on a 1:1 and in group settings, using particular area of interest/expertise, as agreed with Clinical staff and Team Manager.
  • To engage and support service users to access services and support them with attending clinical appointments
  • Help individuals identify their own achievable and meaningful recovery goals and actively, practically and creatively support their progress towards these.
  • Draw upon own lived experience to inspire hope, model selfawareness and facilitate service users in developing their own resourcefulness for managing their health and wellbeing.
  • Facilitate access to community groups and networks that enable participation in community and/or work activities, to maximise service user's opportunities for socially valued roles and positive identity.
  • Ensure that service user's peer recovery goals are integrated into the Trusts care plan/CPA process and are reviewed on a regular basis, through liaising closely with care coordinators as necessary.
  • To actively engage with colleagues and other professionals to ensure the needs of the client group are met through promoting recovery orientated, strengthsbased
  • To support, encourage and guide as appropriate more junior peer support workers within the team.
  • To raise awareness of recovery language with Trust staff by modelling positive strengths based, nondiscriminatory, nonjargon, nonmedicalised language in all areas of work.
