Job summary

As a Senior HealthCare Support Worker with demonstrable experience, you will be expected to provide support to clinical areas that require enhanced care and observations for patients who may be at risk to themselves and / or others. This could be due to a wide range of complex needs and / or other contributing factors such as; autism, brain injuries, confusion, delirium, dementia, end of life agitation, learning disability, mental health, safeguarding concerns and substance withdrawal.

The successful candidate will be motivated and enthusiastic with excellent communication skills and embrace the challenge of working in a highly demanding environment where all patients' needs are managed as safely, efficiently and compassionately as possible across the acute setting.

As part of the role, you may be required to work on a 1:1 basis with high-risk patients, support the clinical area by providing Baywatch for a number of lesser risk patients, or provide general support to clinical areas where staffing numbers are low. This could be anywhere across the Trust, working with both adults and children.

"Please note that in order to be considered for this post as a band 3, a candidate would need to have already completed a Level 3 in Health & Social Care or Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship. If this has not already been obtained, the post could only be offered at band 2 until completion of a Level 3 programme".

Interviews will take place on a face to face basis.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for delivering effective, specialised, high quality healthcare, ensuring the area of work runs smoothly and efficiently. Works under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner. Works within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to local and national protocols / standard operating procedures / policies. Delivers high standards of compassionate, dignified care, managing their time, tasks, and resources effectively. Undertakes training, assessment and facilitation of peers and other staff as required. To support Registered Practitioners in their duties and contribute to the holistic care of patients as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team. To ensure that the environment is clean, safe, tidy and welcoming for patients and visitors.

To undertake rotational work within the department as / if required.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

This job description describes the role that the Healthcare Support Worker will be working to within their clinical area.

Supervision and support will be provided during tasks, to safely gain experience and confidence and to successfully complete any associated training programmes deemed necessary.

The role of the Senior Healthcare Support Worker is to:

To provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care, both on a 1:1 basis or baywatch, recognising and meeting specific needs of the patient(s) who are identified as needing enhanced care and observation as required. Assist with education of ward staff on assessing patients needs, identifying potential triggers and guidance on techniques for managing the patient requiring enhanced observation. Be able to work competently and confidently across all wards and departments within the trust, within the remit of the role and adopt a professional, caring attitude at all times towards patients, families, carers and other staff members. To support registered staff with the physical health, comfort and wellbeing of patients, including recognition, recording and reporting all changes to the patients medical condition (using the NEWS 2 scoring system), escalate any safeguarding concerns appropriately and report any untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies and injury to senior staff. To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures, being mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues, and patients. To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise his/her role within the work area. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

GCSEs Grade A-C/4-9 in Maths and English or Functional Skills level 2 in Maths and English Care Certificate or willingness to complete the Care Certificate training programme offered within 12 weeks of commencement of employment Plus either o Level 3 in Health & Social Care or Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Or o Demonstrable equivalent experience and proven knowledge/skills and behaviours as a Healthcare Support Worker in a Band 2 clinical role. You will need to agree to undertake the next Level 3 course (Upon completion of the course moving to the Band 3 pay scale) Has completed or willing to undertake and complete the Care Certificate training programme
