Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) focuses on preparing court-involved youth to become successful citizens, aiming to enhance public safety by offering effective interventions that positively impact the lives of young individuals while strengthening families and communities within the Commonwealth. The special education teacher plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality educational programs and services through effective instruction tailored to meet students' needs. Responsibilities include developing and ensuring the implementation of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for special education students, in alignment with the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements. The Special Education Teacher directly reports to the Building Principal and/or Assistant Principal.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree; Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teacher License with endorsements in special education; Experience in teaching students with disabilities, preparing IEPs, data collection, and progress reporting. Understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia. Proficiency in developing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, implementing evidence-based strategies and interventions, and delivering specialized instruction. Knowledgeable in academic content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment necessary for successful job performance. Ability to oversee students and youth, manage classroom dynamics effectively, and maintain precise records.

Additional Considerations

Experience in teaching in a secondary school setting; Working with at-risk youth.
