An exciting opportunity has arisen for a HCPC registered Principal Clinical Scientist to join our Biochemistry team at UHB which includes 3 Consultant Clinical Scientists, 1 Consultant Chemical Pathologist, 4 Principal Clinical Scientists (including this post), 11 Senior Clinical Scientists and 3 STP trainees.

We have excellent links with the University of Birmingham and are involved in the provision of the programme for STPs.

The UHB Biochemistry department is strong clinically and analytically providing a wide range of services including specialist chromatography, mass spectrometry and radio immunoassay techniques.

There are automation laboratories across four hospital sites (Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Queen Elizabeth hospitals), with the automation laboratories at QE and Heartlands sites being large, state of the art laboratories fitted with Abbott pre-analytics, Abbott Alinity platforms and tracks.

The post holder will be required to primarily work in our specialist testing laboratory on the Queen Elizabeth site however a degree of cross site working is to be expected.

They will be required to liaise closely with the Operations Manager and Consultant Clinical Scientist for that section to provide high quality analyses over an extensive repertoire.

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the clinical support activities of the department by participating in the duty biochemist rota.

1st class or 2:1 honors degree in biochemistry, chemistry or a closely related science
*Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines
*MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent
*PhD in a relevant area of science

Substantial experience as a clinical scientist in a large laboratory covering an extensive range of tests
*Previous experience in audit, research and development, method/equipment appraisal and evaluation, management of a specialist or routine service
*Evidence of continuous professional development and discipline specific proficiency for maintenance of HCPC registration
*An advanced, specialist knowledge of clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine
*Awareness of clinical governance and risk management
*Awareness of laboratory health and safety
*Awareness and experience of laboratory accreditation standards

Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations
*Manage workload effectively when the workload is unpredictable and there are competing demands (medical emergency)
*Effective organisational, planning and time management skills
*Ability to work Saturday mornings and bank holidays as part of a rota
