Job Responsibility

You'll report to the Series Producer and Executive Producer:-


• To generate creative ideas and long term story ideas of the highest standard consistent with the series.

• To write storylines of a high standard that conform to the editorial brief and are available for use at the appropriate time.

• To turn drafts around quickly and creatively and to ensure all deadlines are met.

• To maintain an overview of the entire series from a story perspective and to plan forward.

• To keep abreast of what is happening in the NHS and to speak regularly to our medical advisors to bring context into storylining.

• To support the development of storylines and scripts editorially and administratively within the story team.

• To work collaboratively with writers and the editorial department on the show to communicate the intention of storylines and maintain a dialogue on any serial related issues.

• To ensure the consistent treatment of established characters and continuity within the story line and episodes.

• To manage a story team. To motivate those individuals to do their best work, to manage their PDRs, to deal with their concerns fairly and to pass them on to the series producer and exec producer when appropriate.

• To lead writers rooms and story conferences.

• To utilise the writer's studio process efficiently and effectively to create high quality serial storylines and surprising guest stories.

• To manage medical advice to both generate surprising, authentic stories and to ensure accuracy.

• To manage the input of any necessary story research and specialist advice

• To co-ordinate, input and communicate scheduling, production and editorial policy notes on the storylines.

• To liaise with actors over forthcoming storylines. To exercise good judgement about the timing of what to disclose when in discussion with the series producer and the exec producer. To exercise tact, diplomacy and appropriate discretion at all times.

• Where necessary to restructure and generate new storylines.

• To co-ordinate and communicate all storyline changes to those concerned.

• To be aware of the full extent of the financial and purchasing authority of the post, and to ensure that this authority is exercised in accordance with BBC financial arrangements.

• To ensure that they are sufficiently aware of editorial values and standards and that storylines are developed in a manner consistent with the BBC's editorial policy guidelines.

• To make sure that all storylines legally comply with the BBC editorial guidelines and are checked by the editorial policy unit and business affairs where necessary.

Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following;


• Experience of story editing on a prime time TV drama.

• Experience of having worked in writers/story rooms and broken story in a group setting or experience in writing storylines for a long running format.

• An excellent understanding of all aspects of screenwriting, including premise, story, structure and character and an ability to apply this knowledge to working situations with writers.

• Experience of generating creative production ideas, treatments and formats.

• Experience of working under pressure.

• Interest in popular drama and in particular an awareness and understanding of BBC Drama for a family slot.

• An awareness of the financial consequences of editorial decisions.

• The ability to establish quickly the intentions of Producers and convey these to the writers and editorial team.

• The ability to keep abreast of professional, technological and working practice changes.

**Please note that this is a standard Studios Production contract and potentially can involve up to 55 hours per week **
