We have an exciting opportunity for a
Year In Industry Student to join the
Programmes team.


The Northern Year in Industry Placement runs for 44 weeks and offers you the opportunity to experience our culture and gain exposure to what goes on in the rail industry.

The design of the placement is to equip you with the skills and the practical experiences to become a great manager of the future.

You will get to work in one business function, where you will work as part of the team.

The overall aim of giving you real workplace experience, so that your levels of responsibility and accountability will increase, your commercial awareness will grow, and develop your professional experience to your career off to a great start.


About the Placement
The Infrastructure Change team handle multiple projects relating to Northern's infrastructure and business transformation. Projects can range from Network improvements to introduction of new fleets of trains.


The team is responsible for completing infrastructure enhancements to benefit areas of the business including performance, safety, and engineering capability.

Many aspects of the project from procurement and construction to finance, are managed and delivered within the team.

There is also responsibility for planning, managing, and completing infrastructure upgrades which permit the beneficiaries to improve key parameters. The benefits are passed on to customers, performance, safety and more. With the team providing advice and guidance to other departments on business enhancements.


You'll work as part of the infrastructure change team, supporting the work in delivering important upgrade across our depots and stations.


Role Responsibilities


The range of duties will vary in this post, and will be dependant on the active projects and strength of you.


Typically you will be involved in supporting members of the team via data gathering, report writing, participating in project work, participating in meetings and developing a good understanding of the way the business operates.


As you progress in the role, there will be opportunities for managing a small project; enabling you to utilise the skills developed during the placement.

Whilst there is no line management responsibilities, the placement will help shape and enhance the leadership qualities you will possess.


About You
As a highly motivated individual, you'll demonstrate enthusiasm in all that you do.

You demonstrate the ability to engage and communicate with vary levels; with an expectation of public speaking to colleagues and leading conversation s about innovation.

You'll also demonstrate the ability to gather information, interpret and put together in a way that's easy to understand and communicate cross functions and the wider business.

You will also be able to demonstrate the below:

  • You will be working towards completing a bachelor's degree or master's degree.
  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential.
  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge.
  • You have strong communication skills, and you are fluent in English.
  • You have a highperformance and achievement orientation.
  • You are interested in experimentation and innovation.
  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box.
  • A keen eye for detail

It is also essential for you to:

  • Attending a university in the North of England
  • Be in your 2nd year of University and looking for a work placement in your 3rd year.
