About FareShare South West:

FareShare South West is the region's biggest food and environment charity. With warehouses in Plymouth and Bristol, we join the dots between food waste and hunger.


We rescue good, surplus food from farmers, retailers, and other food companies, and deliver it to charities, food banks and schools across the South West.

Once there, it's made into food parcels and used to produce healthy, delicious meals for people that are struggling to get by.

We're a lifeline for tens of thousands of people in our region.


We do this with help from our volunteers who give their time for free to sort food in our warehouses and deliver it to charities.

In return, we work with volunteers to provide them with a supported, meaningful experience that meets their needs, whether through our main volunteering programme or our youth-led employability programme.

Our volunteers are of all ages and from all walks of life.

For some, picking, packing, and delivering food from FareShare South West can be a way for them to give back to their community, a point of social contact or an opportunity to try out a different type of work or workplace.

For others, it can be a source of support or a chance to build confidence and get qualifications that will help them into work.


Purpose of the post:


You'll work with the Warehouse Team across all warehouse operations, including incoming goods, storage, and delivery to our Community Food Members (CFMs) - the charities, schools and food banks that receive food from FareShare South West every week.

You'll maintain high levels of compliance and offer great service to every CFM and will help manage the large and diverse team of volunteers that give their time for free to help get essential food to people most in need.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Warehouse Management

  • Working with the Warehouse Operations Manager, you will ensure the smooth running of food intake, storage, and food distribution and liaise with food industry representatives, FareShare UK (FSUK), distribution companies and hauliers.
  • Support the Warehouse Operations Manager to coordinate and maintain the fleet of vans and machinery used.
  • Provide ongoing support to the Warehouse Operations Manager and Head of Compliance to ensure high levels of compliance in the warehouse throughout the year and for internal/external audits.
  • Alongside the Warehouse Team and Head of Region, you will help reduce food waste and maximise the distribution of surplus food to CFMs.
  • Report to Warehouse Operations Manager with operational improvements to increase efficiency and implement agreed changes.
  • Act as deputy for the Warehouse Operations Manager on occasion.

Volunteer Management

  • Manage (under the direction of the Warehouse Operations Manager) teams of volunteers, delegating/assigning tasks, and supervising work to ensure all tasks completed effectively.
  • Ensure all warehouse volunteers are effectively supported and trained for allocated tasks and have the opportunity to develop their knowledge.
  • Support volunteers' health, safety, and welfare during their shift.
  • Coordinate corporate volunteer programmes and delivery, with support from the wider FSSW team.

Goods In and Storage

  • Follow FSSW Goods in procedures including liaising with suppliers, completing relevant paperwork, using inhouse software and forklifting duties.
  • Ensure pickable and nonpickable areas are ready to receive goods in and dispatch orders at all times.
  • Manage storage of stock within the warehouse, including:
Assisting with stock checks
Ensuring effective stock rotation and sharing best practice

  • Oversee the dispatch of goods through deliveries and collections ensuring all FSSW procedures are followed.
  • Liaise with the wider FSSW team and FSUK to report quality, quantities, and other issues.

Compliance and Health & Safety

  • Operate according to the FareShare HACCP Food Safety Manual.
  • Support the Warehouse Operations Manager to ensure compliance with relevant Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, and other standards applicable to FareShare premises, vehicles, refrigeration equipment, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ensure warehouse complies with FareShare standards and processes as per the FSSW Warehouse Manual including cleaning schedule.
  • Undertake relevant training in Food Hygiene and Health & Safety as required.

General

  • Be willing to receive and engage positively with any visitors to the warehouse.
  • Support FSSW events.
  • Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in support of the main purpose of the role, including liaising with the wider FSSW team.
  • Uphold high quality customer care and standards of conduct when dealing with all stakeholders and the general public.
  • Ensure the security of the FSSW Regional Centre and all assets located within it, including food, and maintained at all times.
  • Driving and forklifting duties where appropriate.
