Our client, a well-renowed and leader in research, are seeking qualified Dental Nurses to work in an acute setting dealing with complex procedures on an ad-hoc basis.

The team are specialist in referrals for Orthodontic, Restorative Desnitry, cleft and maxilloficalsurgeries, running multi-discplinary clinics dealing wtih head and neck cancer patients.


Whether you are an experienced Dental Nurse or newly Qualified, you'll have the opportuntiy to work collectively with the team whom share strong professional relationships and be supported in your development and be a part of a driven and successful team.


Overview

  • To assist the Clinicians within the speciality. This will include Oral Surgeons, Orthodontists, Restorative & Oral Medical Clinicians, Cleft & Cranio Facial Specialists. Promoting & coordinating the delivery of evidenced based care to these groups of patients.
  • Be accountable for the wellbeing of a patient during and after treatment
  • Assist the Principal Dental nurse / Senior Nurses & Department Sister in the day to day management of the department.
  • Work together with the entire multi disciplinary nursing team in developing a team that meets the needs of the patients effectively and efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with the Outpatient Department Multi-Disciplinary and relevant Primary Care teams.
  • Develops and performs additional nursing roles that are necessary to the needs of the OMFS outpatient group following appropriate education and training.
  • Work at all times within the General Dental Council 'Scope of Practice'

Communication

  • Demonstrate the use of effective communication skills when dealing with patients/carers, multidisciplinary team, other teams within the Oxford university Hospitals and the Primary Care Services.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Actively practice good negotiation skills with patients, immediate colleagues and members of the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Promote effective collaboration within the nursing and multidisciplinary team
  • Maintain accurate, legible and complete documentation.
  • Provide patient 'follow up' information both verbal and written to other health care professionals as appropriate.
  • Access patient's computerised investigation results whilst maintaining confidentiality.

Planning and Organisational Skills

  • Plan, organise and prioritise workload efficiently for a group of patients and when necessary as the coordinator of the department on any given shift.
  • Be responsible and accountable for the assessment and evaluation of patient's having undergone or requiring, surgery or nursing interventions without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail in the preparation of specialist equipment for procedures to be undertaken within the department whilst adhering to local and Trust policies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail at all times.
  • Interpret complex clinical information and respond to change promptly and appropriately, as per local guidelines
  • Demonstrate competence in administering 1st line care to patients in a critical condition communicating effectively with the multidisciplinary team to prevent the patient's deterioration.
  • Interpret data and clinical information appropriately supporting / supervising junior colleagues.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies by taking immediate action, requesting assistance / support as indicated, maintaining control and assisting with the support of the patient, relatives and junior staff
  • Recognise the Dental Nurse's role in health education/promotion and incorporate this into patient care.

Personal and People Development

  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development and maintain registration in line with General Dental Council requirements.
  • Complete mandatory and statutory training and competence required by the Trust.
  • Participate in the department's education programme
  • Support junior staff and students in meeting their development needs.
  • Develop competency in the skills necessary to expand this role for example: Preoperative assessment / Radiology / Sedation / Oral Hygiene qualification as required by the service.
  • Actively participate in an annual appraisal, agreeing a personal development plan, and working towards the competencies within an agreed period of time
  • Complete objectives set during individual appraisal and objective setting with the support of the senior nurses / department Sister.
  • Be a mentor to new staff, students and other members of the OPD team.
  • Be a Dental resource to other health care professionals.
  • Be aware of own limitations and development needs and actively seek to address these with support from the department Senior nurses / Sister.

Service Improvement

  • Actively participate in projects that develop staff and the unit profile
  • Participate in the evaluation and audit of practice sharing this information with the team.
  • Be involved in clinical trials / research and review of protocols/guidelines and local policies / projects as required
  • Attend departmental meetings contributing to discussion around change
