We are seeking to recruit a Consultant in Anaesthesia based at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Trust provides acute hospital services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York, North Yorkshire, North East Yorkshire and Ryedale – an area covering 3,400 square miles. We manage ten hospital sites, 1,127 beds (including day cases) and have a workforce of over 8,000 staff working across our hospitals and in the community. Our main sites are in York and Scarborough.
Base hospital: Scarborough
Within the Trust we are part of Care Group 3 , which includes most surgical specialties. We have a Clinical Director responsible for the Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care directorate (TACC) across the Trust. We also have in support Lead Clinicians for Intensive Care, Anaesthetics and Theatres.
10 Programmed Activities with the option of up to an additional 2 PAs at the discretion of the department.
Main duties of the job
It is envisaged that the post holder will carry out their duties as a full-time consultant in anaesthesia based at Scarborough Hospital. There may be a requirement to provide cross site working in line with current patterns within the department to support robust and sustainable provision of workforce in anaesthesia.
On-call work will involve overnight Consultant cover of the Intensive Care Unit and weekend daytime cover of the Acute theatres and obstetrics.Post-holders will not need to be FICM accredited but must demonstrate adequate Intensive Care Medicine experience at interview.
The posts are initially contracted for 10 programmed activities per week.
The demands of the Anaesthetic department mean that close and ongoing collaboration with consultant colleagues is required. A degree of mutual two-way flexibility in sessional provision is anticipated.
Individual job plans will be discussed and finalised with the clinical director on appointment and will become operational on commencement. All job plans are agreed in line with the Trusts Job Planning Principles.
The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant's typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial responsibilities and external commitments.
Additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
At Scarborough Hospital surgical services include orthopaedics, general, vascular, ENT & max-fax, gynae and ophthalmology and are supported by an 8 bedded Intensive Care Unit which has funding for up to 6 level 3 patients at any one time. The main theatre suite comprises five theatres, in addition to which there is a separate maternity theatre. Construction work continues on a new Critical Care Unit within the new Urgent & Emergency Care building.
Anaesthetic services are also provided at Bridlington Hospital , approximately 20 miles from Scarborough. The two theatres available provide over-night and day-case surgery. All cold orthopaedics at the East Coast is currently performed here and they have a well-established and successful enhanced recovery programme. Many arthroplasties are done as day cases in this unit.
Elective surgical services at Scarborough currently include general surgery (including emergencies), trauma, gynaecology, ENT, maxillo-facial, oral surgery, ophthalmology and urology. We now also have a successful and expanding day unit to support this work.
Scarborough Anaesthetic Department achieved ACSA accredited status in 2023.

Registerable medical qualification and FRCA or equivalent Full Registration with GMC and within 6 months of completion of specialist training or equivalent experience.Desirable criteria
