Background of department

  • The University Bookshop plays an essential role supporting the learning experience of students, and the teaching and research work of staff. It is fully engaged in the cultural life of the University. Given the importance of delivering a firstclass higher education student experience an academic bookshop on campus is a key asset for a vibrant learning community. A small team of booksellers provide a highly professional, customerdriven service to all staff and students. This is achieved by holding a good stock of titles on reading lists, a comprehensive range of academic textbooks, as well as general trade titles. The Bookshop is keen to support the community role of the University and is therefore open to the public, and supports a number of book festivals, public lectures, author signings, and conferences throughout the year. The Bookshop also stocks a wide range of university merchandise, as well as many other nonbook products.

The role

  • We are looking for an enthusiastic fulltime bookseller dedicated to providing a highquality customerfocused service. Responsibilities of the post include handling customer enquiries and taking orders (instore and online); the promotion and display of stock; stock management and processing (from invoice delivery to the generation of reading lists); event support; using bibliographic databases, EPOS software, procurement systems; and other routine activities such as the opening and closing of the store.
  • In addition, this post will have responsibilities for maintaining and developing the procurement of nonbook items; working with book trade systems such as BATCH; and to support the financial reporting requirements of the University Bookshop software system and the University finance system.

The person

  • You will have good experience of working in a customer services environment, operating automated till systems, and undertaking financial transactions. You will also be able to prioritise your workload under pressure. Good interpersonal skills and an enthusiastic approach are key requirements of this post, as is the ability to work independently and as a team member. Good manual handling skills are essential to the post. You will be educated to GCSE or equivalent with good numeracy skills. Familiarity with bookshop procedures and a keen knowledge of the book trade would be an advantage. Working with systems and databases is a key part of this role and good IT skills are essential.

Additional information

  • Total hours of work will be 37 hours: typically, between 8.15am to 6.15pm Monday to Thursday, and 8.15am to 5.15pm on Friday. Work outside of these core hours supporting conferences and events at weekends and evenings should be expected.
