General Reinsurance, London Branch has an opening for a Senior Wordings Specialist in our International Property and Casualty Unit.

Main Purpose of the Role

To provide support to underwriters and claims handlers in handling non-contentious reinsurance wordings queries across our International P&C reinsurance business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical expert for wordings issues on treaty and facultative reinsurance business within our international P&C operations;
  • Evaluate proposed wordings for compliance with internal guidelines, clarity, accuracy, and completeness, with the ability to draft amendments when necessary and provide non-technical explanations to underwriters, client managers, and claims handlers;
  • Develop new clauses and wordings as needed;
  • Assist in identifying emerging risks and shaping our wordings requirements accordingly;
  • Share expertise with internal and external stakeholders through workshops, training sessions, and briefing notes;
  • Participate actively in developing market standard wordings through involvement in trade associations;
  • Contribute to the peer review process;
  • Act as a deputy for the Head of Wordings in International P&C as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum upper second-class honors degree/ Volljurist with first or second Staatsexamen mit Prädikat;
  • Qualified to practice law in the UK or Germany;
  • Significant prior experience in P&C (re)insurance, either at a specialized law firm or in-house as part of an underwriting, claims, wordings, or legal team, including providing advice on complex coverage matters.

Behavioural Competencies:

  • Excellent knowledge of contract law and insurance contract law;
  • Proficiency in English and preferably German at a native speaker level;
  • Exceptional drafting and communication skills, capable of elucidating the narrative behind a wording through real-world examples and explaining the pros and cons of different constructions;
  • Strong research abilities;
  • Ability to balance attention to detail with solid commercial judgement;
  • Responsive, able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Team player with a solution-oriented approach;
  • Inspires trust and confidence;
  • Comfortable working in an international setting covering multiple jurisdictions.
