The post holder will be part of a small and friendly Knowledge and Library Services (KLS) team who provide for the information and knowledge needs of the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust's staff.


The Assistant Librarian - Resources and Training post holder will be responsible for the selection, management and exploitation of print and electronic information relevant to the needs of staff and students at the Trust.


The post holder will support library users in the use of resources by way of information skills training, and the maintenance and promotion of print and electronic resources.


This role requires a proactive professional librarian with a strong customer focus to enable the library to develop its resource collections in a cost-effective manner for the benefit of staff and students.

This role is crucial in supporting the educational and learning environment and the practice of evidence-based healthcare.

A key part of the role will be to effectively exploit available technology and systems to enhance the user experience through delivering training on healthcare databases and electronic resources.


The post holder will work with the team's Librarians to deliver a programme of information skills training; both one-to-one and group sessions.

The post holder will utilise their expert knowledge of online searching to proactively provide comprehensive evidence searches for library members, clinical teams and other library users where appropriate.


Working with the library team, the post holder will promote and market the range of services and resources the library offers to all stakeholders; playing an active role in day to day library service planning and delivery.

This may include the development of policy and strategy, and will include the supervision of staff in the absence of senior Library staff.


The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) provides a full range of general acute, outpatient and diagnostic services at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop's Stortford, and St Margaret's Hospital in Epping.


We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Epping.

Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.


  • Be responsible for the selection, acquisition and development of an up to date stock of physical and electronic resources to reflect the needs of library users.
  • Be responsible for the cataloguing and classification of all library materials in accordance with professional and locally agreed standards.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Library systems such as the regional Library Management System (KOHA), LibKey (link resolver), and checking and editing of data to ensure accurate information is available to users.
  • Assist in the training of staff and users in the effective use of the library's electronic resources.
  • Assist in the creation and updating of information on the library website and Trust intranet.
  • In partnership with the Trust IT Department ensure that all the hardware and software within the library environment is fully functional and up to date.
  • Maintain an awareness of developments in mobile technologies and electronic resources and to bring to the attention of the library team any advances which can improve the delivery of services to all our users.
  • Contribute towards the effective marketing of the department, including the development of publicity and promotional materials.
  • Conduct literature searches using online databases to deliver evidencebased results.
  • Lead the Library's training programme by delivering inductions; and developing, updating and presenting structured information skills training sessions, to help users acquire the information skills necessary for evidencebased practice and professional development.
  • Delivering training sessions which may include: presentations, onetoone training, group or virtual training, to support development of literature searching and critical appraisal skills across all levels of staff.
  • Be responsible for the collection and analysis of statistics, including resource usage and activity data, key performance indicators and detailed sitespecific information for resource purchases and subscriptions.
  • Make resource recommendations based on benchmarking, trials and usage data, achieving valueformoney and aligning to service user needs.
  • Provide library counter cover as required.
