Main duties of the job You will participate in the provision and development of an effective, high quality speech and language therapy service for children, young people and families. You will assess, diagnose and manage speech, language and communication difficulties in a range of clients, organising your caseload independently but with access to mentoring, clinical and management supervision. You will demonstrate sound clinical judgement, including the ability to negotiate, differential diagnose and develop and evaluate care plans. You will also be a member of the multidisciplinary team and provide advice to other professionals. You will work with and support speech and language therapy assistants. As with all health care, you will complete timely, accurate and comprehensive clinical records. Job description Job responsibilities To participate in the provision, development, organisation and co-ordination of an effective, high quality Speech and Language Therapy Service to specified client groups. To provide effective clinical input to these clients. To provide clinical advice on the assessment, diagnosis and management of speech, language and communication difficulties and where applicable, swallowing difficulties, with a range of clients, including those with complex needs and to develop a clinical interest within the context of the caseload. To follow and, when required, contribute to the development of departmental policies/guidelines and to participate in the development of innovations in service delivery taking account of Clinical Governance. To manage a caseload independently with regular supervision and to prepare, implement and evaluate communication programmes and advice for clients to ensure the delivery of designated standards of care consistent with service policy and RCSLT guidelines. To demonstrate sound clinical judgment, including negotiation, differential diagnosis, reflection, evaluation and the development of care plans. Clinical practice should be framed with reference to evidence based practice, having access to a supervisor, showing a recognition of own professional boundaries and the need for supervision, support and advice. To demonstrate flexibility with clients, carers and others around individual case management. To provide advice regarding the needs of individual clients to the multi-agency team, demonstrating team-working skills. To participate in the development and delivery of specified training and group work to a variety of recipients with the support of more senior members of staff. To develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships showing an awareness of other professions and agencies which provide services to clients with communication difficulties. To reflect on practice individually and with peers and to identify personal strengths and needs and to demonstrate continuous professional development and maintain a portfolio in line with professional and Trust recommendations. To provide advice and support to volunteers and assistants and to provide mentoring to newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists. To provide student placements in line with RCSLT guidelines and to assist in the development of students from other professional groups. To maintain accurate and timely clinical records in line with Departmental and Trust protocols, write appropriate reports, attend case conferences and reviews and to provide statistical information to facilitate future business planning in line with Trust objectives. To participate in Departmental information gathering, audit and research to support clinical effectiveness and Clinical Governance. To adhere to relevant procedures including safeguarding children, SEN and other legal frameworks. Experience Essential
  • Experience of working with children in a clinical setting.
Desirable
  • Previous experience as a speech and language therapist working in the NHS.
Qualifications Essential
  • Degree in speech and language pathology or therapy or equivalent.
  • Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist Certificate to Practice.
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Special Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • A demonstrable range of core professional skills, including familiarity with a range of clinical protocols.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of communication disorders presenting in a range of clients with communication difficulties in order to provide assessment, diagnosis and intervention.
  • Flexible clinical skills which take account of the needs of the individual client.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of issues related to the delivery of training to a range of recipients.
  • Insight into issues of confidentiality in the context of health care.
  • Insight into the requirement for excellence in clinical record keeping.
  • An awareness of the functions of related professions, agencies and legislation relating to services to clients.
Desirable
  • An awareness of screening procedure for swallowing difficulties.
Physical Attributes Essential
  • Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post. A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
