Job summary:


Army Welfare Service (AWS) is looking for an Engagement & Communications (E & C) lead to deliver its Engagement & Communications plan, making sure that the military community and Chain of Command are aware of the full scope of specialist welfare services AWS delivers.

AWS is the Army's professional welfare provider, delivering a comprehensive and confidential welfare service responsive to the needs of serving personnel, their families and the chain of command.

AWS delivers Personal Support, providing confidential and professional specialist welfare, and Community Support, providing youth and community projects and activities for children and young people.


The post holder will manage communications on behalf of HQ AWS using all available communication channels to deliver AWS messaging that is relevant, accurate and within MOD policy.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week

Job description:

  • The AWS E & C lead will design and deliver the internal and external communications activity for AWS. The post holder will encourage and facilitate communication and collaborative working across AWS to support delivery and ensure the appropriate promotion of AWS services both internally to Defence and externally. This will require both a proactive and reactive approach.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Implement the AWS Engagement & Communications (E&C) Plan, to cohere with the Army's Communications, Marketing & Engagement Strategy as directed.
  • Act as chair of the AWS E&C Working Group developing strategies and initiatives that enable all employees to engage with and adhere to the communications plan.
  • Plan a forecast of events and work with Defence Communications on key promotional campaigns, as agreed within HQ AWS.
  • Represent AWS at internal meetings across the wider organisation.
  • Work with HQ staff to design and produce/source promotional materials in consultation with Army Media and Communications, to promote AWS and sustain engagement with the target audience.
  • Work with Army Communications to manage AWS presence on the Army website, exploiting opportunities for improvement wherever possible. Manage social media activity, ensure AWS content on MOD systems is current and be responsible for the AWS Defence Connect site.
  • Lead on the design of and advise staff on the use of communication tools appropriate for specific audiences and messages, including advertising, leaflets and posters, website, presentations, social media etc.
  • Provide direction to AWS staff on branding and maintain a library of digital templates.
  • Develop where possible, new ways of Digital and Smarter working and promote AWS to deliver the organisation's goals.
  • Engage with key partners, act as a point of contact for internal engagement and external media requests.
  • Ensure AWS is follows MOD and Army policy on communications, media contact and engagement on social media. Provide advice and guidance to staff at all levels.
  • Contribute to the Regional Command communications plan and coordinating communications output.
  • Work in accordance with appropriate MOD policies and procedures, AWS Standard Operating Instructions (SOI) and within the Army Code of Confidentiality.
  • Undertake Line Manager and/or Counter Signing Officer duties as required by the post.
  • Undertake other duties within the terms and conditions appropriate to the grade and role as directed by the Line Manager
