Location: The Old Vic, 103 The Cut, London, SE1 8NB and Mercury House, 117 Community Group and Primary School locations

Hours: Rehearsals and concerts to take place Monday–Friday, between 9.30am–5.30pm. Some occasional out of hours work (e.g., evenings and weekends)

Fee: £3290 (£140 session rate) split across 3 prep days, 18 rehearsals, 2 concerts and a debrief meeting

Role Summary

12 Choirs of Christmas brings together community groups for people aged 50+ with primary school children across London to create 12 intergenerational choirs. The project encourages sharing and connection and supports participants' mental health and wellbeing.

Each choir is supported by a musical director and given three rehearsals before performing a live Christmas concert in the festive surroundings of The Old Vic foyer each December. All concerts are free to attend and open to friends, family and the local community.

Teachers and group leaders receive an additional music-based workshop to support their professional development.

We are looking to hire two freelance musical directors to support with the delivery of the programme.

12 Choirs of Christmas has three key aims:

  • To build meaningful connections across generations to support the mental health and wellbeing of participants, staff and audience.
  • To continue The Old Vic's mission to make theatre open and accessible to anyone.
  • To help build lasting connections between primary schools and community groups that continue beyond the programme.

Areas of responsibility

  • Act as Musical Director for six inter-generational choirs (including 1 Community Group and 1 Primary school in each) and lead on rehearsals, supported by an Assistant Facilitator
  • To MD the concerts for 6 choirs across 2 days
  • To develop choir rehearsal plans that create cohesion and foster connection between the School and Community Group in each Choir.
  • To prepare music for rehearsals, updating the lyric sheets for the choirs and music sheets if needed and relay changes to the Community Manager and Education & Community Coordinator
  • To develop good relationships with the Teachers and Community Group Leaders
  • To represent the Old Vic whilst working off site in Community and or School spaces and ensure its reputation is maintained.
  • To feedback how each session went by completing an online evaluation form and relaying any necessary information back to the Community Manager and the Education and Community Coordinator
  • To make note of challenges and success during the project and attend the Facilitator de-brief once concerts are complete.
  • To attend the Meet and Greet sessions with the Teachers and Group Leaders
  • To ensure the Community Group and Schools fill out evaluation forms and Equal opportunities forms assisting where needed

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience of leading a choir and or musical rehearsal room
    • Confident pianist to teach songs and lead public concert
    • Experience of planning workshops and facilitating high quality participatory arts projects
    • Experience of working with adults and young people from diverse backgrounds
    • Experience of working with adults and young people with additional needs
    • Excellent soft skills including verbal communication skills, diplomacy and compassionate approach to working
    • Ability to work effectively in an environment with competing demands.
    • Knowledge around safeguarding Adults and Children
    • An Enhanced DBS Certificate
    • Excellent organisational and time keeping skills.
    • Responsive to emails and the ability to communicate needs of the choirs to the Community Manager and Education & Community Coordinator.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS check as the role may interact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
