Salary:
£28,511 to £30,504 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £28,511 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £30,504 will be via incremental progression.

This is an exciting time to be working as Safety Camera Operations Investigator for the Metropolitan Police Service. In addition to large-scale transformation, there's the unique and ever-evolving challenge of policing London.

The Safety Camera Operations department is responsible for enforcement relating to road traffic speeding offences and Red-Light offences captured via the Safety Camera digital network.

There is a dedicated Investigation Team who investigate a variety of traffic offences relating to vehicles activating safety cameras pan London.

This includes multiple offenders, high speeders, invalid documentation offences, cloned vehicle registrations, insurance fraud and perverting the course of justice.

The team's work is critical to the effective and timely investigation of complex Safety Camera Related Offences which will inevitably be processed to court for the impartial adjudication of a magistrates in the first instance but could lead to Crown Court attendance if required.


Key Responsibilities
What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:

  • Carry out lines of investigative enquiries involving judgement and discretion to identify drivers of vehicles involved in traffic offences detected by safety cameras. Offence cases will be referred to the attention of the Investigation team only after the Camera Processing staff members have been unable to identify offenders through standard processes.
  • Visit the addresses of potential suspects and other members of the public to carry out vehicle examinations connected with investigations; take photographs and prepare evidential statements as necessary.
  • Liaise with Camera Prosecutions to assist with the preparation of case papers; attend court as required.
  • Deal with enquiries/requests for assistance from the police service and other interested agencies.
  • Liaise with police officers, DVLA, Local Borough Councils and other agencies in the course of duty.
  • Ensure that appropriate intelligence and information is made available within the MPS.
  • Use MPS computer systems; make enquiries/entries on the Police National Computer relating to camera offences and ensure compliance with data protection requirements.
  • Drive MPS vehicles as authorised in the course of duty.
  • Obtain and compose MG11 Statements.
  • Hold caution +3 interviews with suspects/victims/witnesses.
  • Compose Crime files as directed.
  • Undertake any other administrative duties as directed.

Essential Criteria

  • Working as part of a team
  • The ability to work under pressure, prioritise and manage workloads daily
  • Hold a Full UK driving licence
  • Be able to attend and successfully complete Officer Safety Training (OST). Upon completion PPE will be provided
  • The ability to attend and successfully complete Emergency Life Support Training (ELS). Upon completion PPE will be provided
  • To currently hold a basic level MET driving permit or be willing to undertake the relevant driving training course assessment

Desirable Criteria

  • Good working knowledge of information technology, including Microsoft Office programs
  • Be confident in the preparation of prosecution files, MG11 Statements, and providing evidence in person at court trials when required
  • Knowledge or competent in the use of intelligence and crime systems such as CRIS, Crimint, IIP, Experian, EAPPS, CONNECT, COPA, PNC
  • To obtain statements from victims and conduct caution +3 interviews with suspects
  • To attend Magistrates or Crown Court as and when requested, to provide evidence in relation to investigations
