This is a key leadership role within United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust (ULHT), the post of Head of Strategy and Best Practice will support the Deputy Director of Strategy and Planning by:

  • Working collaboratively with clinical leaders to support the development of effective strategies for clinical services across ULHT to achieve clinical and financial sustainability.
  • Leading and consolidating the development of Clinical Strategies for both the organisation as a whole and for all Clinical specialties through the Specialty Review Programme.
  • Developing new business, market and best practice appraisals, and integrated system working where opportunities arise through the Speciality Reviews or the Trust's Clinical Strategy to enable delivery of the strategy actions and ULHT strategic priorities.
  • Working with the system to ensure alignment between ULHT Clinical Strategies and the NHS Long Term Plan and Operating Guidance.


Specific responsibilities of the post holder are the strategic leadership of the Trust Clinical workstreams of the 'Getting it Right First Time' response, and oversight and management of the Project management functions of the GIRFT workstreams.


A key requirement of this role is the development of effective relationships with stakeholders across organisational boundaries with particular focus on the development and subsequent delivery of the Clinical Strategies within the Lincolnshire System Long Term Plan.

There are three key elements to this job role. The first is the development and delivery of the ULHT Clinical Strategy.

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership and coordination of the development of the Trust Clinical Strategy for the next five years and for the coordination and delivery of the strategic engagement process, working with clinical leaders and management teams to develop the Trust wide Clinical Strategy to achieve short, medium and long term clinical and financial sustainability and transformation.

The second element of the role will be to lead the Specialty Review Programme.

The post holder will be required to support the leadership and delivery of the specialty review process in support of service transformation.


The roles will work with the business intelligence team to ensure the triangulation of internal and external datasets which allow the speciality to review its performance - as a minimum this will include: PLICS, Model Hospital, NHS Benchmarking Network National Cost Collection Analysis and NHS Public View.

The final element of the role will be to lead on the GIRFT Programme (Getting it Right First Time).

The post holder will provide leadership and oversight to the GIRFT programme in support of the delivery of the Trust's Strategic Objectives as detailed in the Integrated Improvement Plan and subsequent plans.
