  • Job description
  • We are looking for an experienced ecologist to join our Analysis and Reporting (A&R) team. A&R collect and report on freshwater ecology data across the West Midlands to determine the health of our waterways. This data informs management plans and licencing to maintain and improve freshwater ecosystems.

The role covers a wide range of responsibilities including tracking progress on invertebrate, macrophyte and river habitat survey in line with KPIs, data management, analysis and interpretation of freshwater ecological and water quality data using the most appropriate tools and statistical methods to drive environmental outcomes and compiling and quality assuring reports.

You will also provide specialist advice and support to internal teams and external partners to influence compliance with policy, legislation and best practice ways of working that are in line with team business plans.

This may involve working with or producing technical documentation and reports to support work and management decisions.

You will also be engaging nationally within the organisation to understand best practice affecting A&R and conversely sharing knowledge across the organisation.

The role also involves horizon scanning for innovative working methods to improve team efficiency, and helping to build technical resilience in the team through coordination and delivery of mentoring and training.

You will also be given an incident support role within the organisation that corresponds to your strengths.

Populating databases, data management and quality assurance, data interpretation & reporting are core work, as is involvement in pollution response & other incident management activities across the organisation's remit.

In addition, there are opportunities to be involved in all our diverse monitoring commission, from water quality assessment, assessment of River Severn regulation through to exploring issues within the Wye catchment and water resources.


  • The team
  • The West Midlands Directorate A&R team consists of aquatic ecologists and technical specialists working across 3 offices in the West Midlands. We provide technical expertise on water quality based on ecological evaluation of invertebrates, macrophytes, algae, water quality and fish. We assess pollution events and provide reports on river catchments among other measures.
You will participate in out-of-hours standby shifts and site inspections. A pool / hire vehicle will be available for this use.

  • Experience/skills required
  • An ecological or environmental science based technical degree or sufficient relevant freshwater ecology experience.
  • A foundation in freshwater species identification, familiarity with field survey methodologies for macroinvertebrates, plants, fish and habitat in freshwater.
  • You'll be calm under pressure and able to place within the wider picture of the organisation and it's role.
  • Have sound health & safety knowledge and the ability to guide others in correct operating procedures during lab & field work.
  • Be able to produce and effectively interpret data to develop evidence and solve complex technical issues.
  • A good communicator with time management/data management/interpersonal skills, who can present verbal/written arguments to a wide range of audiences, with the ability to simplify technical detail.
  • You'll be able to work both independently and as part of a team across different departments.
  • Full UK Driving Licence required.
