YOU is a registered charity that has been providing care, support and advice for over 30 years to vulnerable people, working across Hampshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight to give them the tools and resources they need to live independent, secure and valued lives.

Somerset Integrated Domestic Abuse Services are the Hidden Violence and Abuse Service covering Somerset. This innovative and exciting service works with victims of domestic abuse, stalking, sexual crime and children and young people. Our services aim to support the whole family where we are able.

The service offers a variety of support and interventions including outreach, refuge, target hardening, court support, and recovery groups.

Essential Requirements:

The successful Children and Young Persons Therapeutic Play Worker will have:

  • NNEB, Therapeutic qualification/experience or NVQ 3 in working with children qualification or equivalent work level experience.
  • Experience of working with children, and those affected by domestic violence and abuse.
  • Understanding of the issues affecting children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding issues and processes for children.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescence development.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and on call as required.
  • Ability to work across the county and travel to other Trust locations when necessary.

The Role:


The overall purpose of this role is to work with children and young people (CYP) who reside in a refuge or safe house/sanctuary accommodation, and who are experiencing familial domestic abuse, and/or who are harming a family member.

You will carry out appropriate assessments, working in partnership with the other SIDAS teams to ensure a holistic response.

You will complete/review DASH young people's risk assessments, working with colleagues to design and provide one to one sessions as required, whether in community safe housing or accommodation-based settings.

You are responsible for safeguarding the people you work with, and raising alerts as required. All interventions will have a therapeutic gain for the child/young person.

Some of the main responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Together with the non-abusing parent/carer and child/ren, I will complete the required assessments for each child and young person referred to crisis accommodation.
  • Together with the nonabusing parent/carer and child/ren we will develop a range of play activities within crisis accommodation.
  • Together with the nonabusing parent/carer, children and colleagues we will identify times when a specific creative group would be delivered to meet the needs of children effectively with crisis accommodation.
  • Together with colleagues we will develop a range of parenting groups.
  • Together with the nonabusing parent/carer we will support children and young people to come to terms with the experiences of domestic abuse.
  • I hold a case load of CYP within all accommodationbased settings, and manage my diary ensuring I meet their needs as individuals.
  • I advocate on behalf of CYP in a professional and respectful manner, encouraging and enabling CYP to have their own voice and develop selfresilience.
  • I will work with colleagues, parents, children and other professionals to support children and young people who are experiencing domestic abuse.
  • I will coproduce therapeutic play sessions with children and young people, ensuring they are age appropriate and evidenced led.
  • I will capture the voice of each child and young person during each session via feedback, and at the end of the sessions.
  • I will work closely with colleagues in safeguarding so that children at risk due to domestic violence are identified and receive a support intervention.
  • I will update my line manager/supervisor regarding any other support required for children at the crisis accommodation and within the community.
