We are looking to recruit a Band 2 Neonatal Assistant who is ready to work in an innovative environment where every team member makes a difference.

You will be responsible for ensuring our equipment and environment is cleaned according to infection control standards, stocking up the nurseries and assisting the MDT to ensure the unit runs smoothly.

This role is for 24 hours per week, is week days only, no unsocial hours, weekends or night duty.


Work as a Neonatal Assistant on the Neonatal Unit, to assist the multidisciplinary team in the running of the unit by providing equipment care, clerical, stores management and supporting family centred care.

Carry out assigned tasks in which competencies have been attained.

To assist and contribute to an effective and safe environment within the Neonatal Unit.

Being conversant with the Trust and local policies for safe handling, cleaning and maintenance of equipment.

To undertake and be responsible for the cleaning of all specialised equipment such as ventilators, incubators and breast pumps.

Ensure equipment is correctly assembled and in safe working order.

Ensure accurate record keeping is maintained on cleaning of equipment.

Report any faulty or defective equipment to the nurse in charge.

Contribute to the development of policies and procedures relating to the equipment.


Be responsible for the cleanliness and general tidiness throughout the Unit including nurseries, utility room, parents rooms, milk and pharmacy fridges, surfaces and storage areas.

Ensure adequate stocks are maintained within nurseries and inform nurse in charge when cupboard stocks are low.

Keep up to date with laundry.

Ensure Milton solution is changed daily in accordance with daily tasks.

Maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team and all visitors to the unit.


To undertake as required collection and removal of laundry and rubbish to and from a pre-determined point on the unit.

To undertake as required the movement of specimens, x-rays and health records.

Assist with clerical and reception duties such as answering the phone and filing.


To undertake duties as may be required and delegated by a trained nurse and in which competency has been deemed.

Be aware of any child protection issues reporting and concerns to the nurse in charge.

Change suction tubing and containers as per unit guidelines.

Assist with cleaning of frequent touch surfaces in the clinical environment including the Work stations on Wheels (WOW).

Answer the telephone in a timely and professional manner and refer calls as appropriate.

To be aware of current hospital procedures on fire and cardiac arrest and to take appropriate action.


Communicate with parents and relatives in a courteous, sensitive and appropriate manner, and refer to the nurse in charge as required.

Report any incidents, accidents, concerns, near misses or complaints to the nurse in charge or matron.


Be sensitive to parents and their environment, ensuring communication of a personal and or private nature is discreet and patient confidentiality is maintained.

Provide refreshments for distressed parents as instructed by qualified staff.

Assist the trained nurse in escorting babies as required.

Teach mothers how to express and safely store their breast milk.

To ensure that the privacy and dignity of mothers are respected at all times especially when expressing their milk.
