The Opportunity:


An exciting opportunity has been created within our Housing and Communities team at Braintree District Council for an 18-month fixed term contract as a Tenancy Sustainment Officer.


We are looking for someone who ideally has extensive knowledge and or experience of working with tenants and landlords in the private rented sector.

However, experience is not necessarily essential if you have strong transferable skills, the right attitude and a keen desire to learn.


As our Tenancy Sustainment Officer, you will provide a comprehensive and holistic tenancy sustainment support package to households, to enable them to secure and sustain a tenancy within the Private Rented Sector.

You will assist households with benefits advice and advocacy, debt counselling, benefit claims, income maximisation and budgeting.


In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with and learn from other services, including local organisations, charities, colleagues within Housing and Communities service, Environmental Health, DWP, Health, Social Care and the Probation service.


Experience:


With the ability to work as part of a team in a busy environment, you will be highly organised and pro-active in your approach, able to manage, balance and meet challenging deadlines in an ever-changing environment.

If you have good negotiation skills and you can effectively communicate with people from all walks of life, we would love to hear from you.

You will have good IT skills and be competent in creating and updating Excel spreadsheets and using Word documents.

Accountabilities:

  • To provide support and advice to households to enable them to sustain a tenancy within the Private Rented Sector.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with letting agents and property owners to promote the Council's financial incentive package to support households to move into the Private Rented Sector.
  • Be the link between the Council, the tenant and property owner and arrange financial incentives and facilitate property checks with colleagues in Environmental Health as required.
  • Develop and maintain a high level of personal contact with tenants and Landlords to maximise engagement and minimise breaches of tenancy.
  • Provide comprehensive support and advice to tenants, identify support needs and any gaps in service provision.
  • Support tenants to understand and adhere to their tenancy agreements and deal with problems relating to tenure, including the prevention and recovery of rent arrears, property condition etc.
  • Follow the guidance of the personcentred Personal Housing Plans and focus on achieving positive outcomes for customers.
  • Assist tenants to complete forms and obtain access to grants, acting as an advocate for tenants with statutory, voluntary and commercial agencies and signpost to other support services if required.
  • To develop a comprehensive network of contacts with all relevant agencies, including Housing Benefit, DWP, Health and Wellbeing, Employment & Training and other support organisations and professionals.
  • To proactively find workable solutions to tenancy sustainment issues as they arise, working with other agencies, teams or departments to achieve them.
  • Attend internal working group meetings, external partnership and Essex County Council meetings and work with partners and neighbouring Local Authorities to identify suitable accommodation
  • Ensure accurate and up to date records on all individuals, issues worked on, and actions taken are recorded and maintained.
  • Support the Empty Homes and Private Rented Sector Officer and Communications Team with the Private Rented Sector Forum and promotion and delivery of service.
