London, Greater London, United Kingdom Sainsbury's Full time

We all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That's waiting for you at Sainsbury's. Think about the scale it takes for us to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions, and variety it involves. Then you'll realise that ours is a modern software engineering environment because it has to be. We made a serious investment into a Tech Academy and into setting standards and principles. We iterate, learn, experiment and push ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP.

Our Tech is constantly evolving, and we are currently running transformation programmes in core areas which underpin several retail functions: Commercial, Supply Chain, Finance, Logistics and BI/Analytics. As such expert knowledge of the existing applications (which will be replaced in the next 3-5 years) is fundamental to the success of transformation itself.

The Tech transformation will deliver unified tech solutions for all areas of the group from Sainsbury's Food, General Merchandise and Clothing to Argos and Habitat. Our tech architecture, processes and data will be simplified as a result.

In parallel with this transformation, work the continues to deliver new customer offers through existing tech.

Senior Mainframe Engineer C5 As a Senior mainframe engineer you will be responsible for design solutions for all Argos mainframe applications and interfaces. As the most senior engineer within a team of 6 onshore and offshore engineers will be required to support other team members.

The Argos mainframe applications integrate with every area of tech and the business, so you will collaborate with Engineers, Architects, Product Managers, Engineering managers and SMEs from multiple business teams on both tactical and strategic solutions.

With your technical craft, curiosity, and experimentation, you will use judgement to apply specific techniques to deliver focused outcomes that support our colleagues and customers. We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We will encourage you to be yourself – analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You will constantly strive to improve the way things are done in your team, contributing as a progressive member of the engineering community. We're a multi-channel, multi-brand business serving millions of customers a day, with the UK's largest loyalty scheme and an ever-evolving set of digital platforms. All of this equals over 1.2 billion transactions each year, presenting a volume, depth and complexity of data that few can match. In an inclusive, agile environment, you'll have the space to be curious, to experiment, and to solve real-world challenges.

More About the Role

You will lead the design and development of and enhancements to large-scale high performance mainframe applications and interfaces. You will be highly experienced in COBOL, APS-COBOL, DB2 SQL, JCL and TWS scheduling. Ideally you will be familiar with VisualJob for TWS, BMC ISPW, File AID MVS, File AID DB2 and Xpediter. A knowledge of ETL tools such as MQSeries and Kafka is also important. You will contribute to our product technical roadmap. You will be highly analytical and a great problem solver. You will lead the design and support of applications and interfaces that underpin the entire Argos operation. Although your primary responsibility will be established technologies you will provide essential support to multiple teams delivering replacement solutions over a minimum of five years. Engineering throughout the whole product lifecycle, including decommissioning.

More About You

Possess analysis and programming expertise in all core mainframe languages and tools as noted above. Be able to understand and explain complex tech solutions and data; to understand and optimise business processes and colleague/customer solutions. Expertise in engineering practice, including knowledge of engineering and architectural principles. Proven experience of software design and implementation, security, infrastructure and any relevant hardware. Self-drive and constantly striving to improve your team, division and peers. Drive for advocacy of agile/lean delivery methodologies as appropriate. You have a passion for delivering solutions to colleagues and customers, owning the whole Software Development Lifecycle. A curiosity to understand end to end solutions far broader than the applications and platform within which you are responsible. A curiosity to understand what drives business and tech developments. A passion for enhancing your knowledge and evidence curiosity in emerging tech. Display empathy and understanding in supporting colleagues in the team to deliver.

We'd all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That's waiting for you at Sainsbury's. Think about the scale it takes for us to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions and variety it involves. Then you'll realise that ours is a modern software engineering environment because it has to be. We've made serious investment into a Tech Academy and into setting standards and principles. We iterate, learn, experiment and push ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to awesome opportunities in everything from AI to reusable tech.

We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer, so you'll be welcomed whoever you are and wherever you work. Around here, there's always the chance to try something new - whether that's as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business - and we take development seriously and promise to support you. We also recognise and celebrate colleagues when they go the extra mile and, where possible, offer flexible working. When you join our team, we'll also offer you an amazing range of benefits. Here are some of them:
