What you'll be doing:

You'll mainly be based at Saltram but will lead the wider team across other areas within our portfolio such as Plymbridge Woods and the wider city of Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth City Council.

From here you'll be leading and managing our fantastic ranger team in all their work to deliver more for land and nature.

Reporting to the Property Operations manager, you'll also be part of the portfolio leadership team, representing the countryside team and working with our visitor operations, curatorial and support teams to deliver the property business plan.


You will demonstrate excellent leadership skills and pass on your practical skills through an exciting and flexible programme of works including meadow creation, pathway installation, woodland management and pond and river restoration at an array of sites across Plymouth which will contribute towards the National Trust's ambitious Land Outdoors and Nature targets.

You will build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, tenants and neighbouring land managers.


You'll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities.


You'll have delegated responsibility for managing the budgets - operational and project - that are required to deliver this work and for protecting and improving the Trust's assets and reputation.

You'll need extensive knowledge of land management and a track record of delivering to a high standard and be able to balance managing and developing our parkland, with the demands of a busy, high profile visitor environment.

So, you'll be;

  • An experienced people manager with the ability to lead a team to deliver effectively
  • An excellent communicator with experience in stakeholder management
  • Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, Inspiring, great with people and comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds, including volunteers
  • Experienced in relevant land, conservation and access management and ideally good knowledge of upland farming
  • Organised and selfmotivated, confidently able to manage a fastpaced workload with competing pulls on your time
  • Confident in managing budgets, finances and contracts
  • Knowledgeable in health and safety requirements and other compliance issues relating to the countryside and visitor activities
  • Holder of a full UK driving licence.
