To liaise daily with medical, nursing, clerical staff and medical records, to ensure that clinics are conducted effectively and efficiently.

Input of data to assist the laboratory technician by creating B numbers for HIS and labeling of samples to be processed.

Support clerical staff to ensure that all case notes, x-rays, results and reports are available at the commencement of the clinic.

Reception of patients, ensuring correct identification as required to support clerical staff.

At the conclusion of the clinic, ensure that all case notes and x-rays are accounted for. The Healthcare Support Worker is responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of the clinical rooms and annexes. The Healthcare Support Worker is responsible for the stocking up of items routinely required during clinic sessions. To undertake errands between departments, delivering specimens, answering telephones and taking messages and results.

Locking and opening of the department. Pulling and filing patient notes. To understand the sensitive nature of GUM work and how clients may feel attending the department. Therefore been non-judgmental, reassuring and sensitive to the clients needs.

Helping to create an environment where clients will comply with treatment and return for follow up appointments.

Dealing with frequent exposure to patient bodily fluids, unpleasant smells and increased risk of harm/ exposure to infection due to the nature of patients conditions.

To obseve and monitor patients condition throughout procedures. To carry out care within limits of knowledge, training and protocols and know when to alert medical staff.

To be self-aware and identify areas of practice where training is required. Manual handling of patients and stores as required and as trained. Responsible for stock control and ordering. Accessing results from the computer and printing these off.

Ensuring all specimens are labeled correctly and transported to the in house laboratory with the correct forms. Including samples that may be used as evidence in court (medical legal specimens). To prepare clinics consulting, examining and treatment rooms, including setting up of trolleys and equipment. To prepare patients for examination as required, including explanation of dressing/undressing requirements, assisting if needed.

Ensuring the client is in the correct position according to which swabs are been taken. To chaperone patients when required within the department. To assist with the care of patients, their relatives/friends and directing/escorting them to other departments as well. Responsible for performing venipuncture, obtaining blood samples for HIV syphilis and hepatitis.

Following the protocols and guidelines for this procedure. Performing urinalysis, two glass urine tests and pregnancy testing. Monitoring and recording blood pressure, pulse, and temperature recordings and alerting staff to abnormalities. Responsible for maintaining a high level of hygiene within the department, cleaning trolleys, work surfaces, laboratory and sluice areas.

Including safe disposal of rubbish, laundry, clinical waste and sharps. To provide direct technical assistance to medical staff as and when required. E.G Passing swabs or equipment to the person examining the patient, treating warts or performing minor operative procedures. To be aware of Health and Safety regulations and departmental policies and procedures.

To undertake first aid training and ensure a first aid kit is held within the department. To provide appropriate care for clients who have fainted following venipuncture or procedures. To observe clients for signs of reactions following injections etc. Have knowledge of clinic procedures.

Attend in-service training as required.

To carry out other duties allocated to him/her by the Nurse in Charge or Outpatients Services Manager appropriate to his/her grade.
