PhD Studentship: Reducing tunnel volume loss using data processing techniques

The selected candidate will have the chance to focus on a study about the impact of tunneling-induced ground movements on nearby structures.
- Summary of the research project
The project involves gathering and analyzing two large data sets related to tunneling operations and utilizing data processing methods to forecast settlements based on TBM data. Moreover, the validation process will include controlled experiments to enhance the AI model. The results and data will be shared openly for further analysis.
Qualifications and prerequisites
The ideal candidate should hold a first or upper second-class BEng/MEng degree in Civil Engineering or Computational Physics, exhibit research capabilities, and have a solid grasp of construction processes and coding.

Benefits
The scholarship covers a 3-year duration offering a tax-free stipend of £21,000 per year along with tuition fees. An additional £1,500/year salary supplement is provided to candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. Successful applicants may also have a teaching assistantship opportunity to earn approximately £2,200/year on average.
