of paediatric anaesthesia at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, this is a replacement post following a retirement.

The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children provides secondary and tertiary health services for the region, and is the site of regional and supra-regional services in paediatric oncology, bone marrow transplantation, cardiology, cardiac surgery, paediatric surgery, intensive care, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, nephrology, neurosurgery, plastics and burns.

The successful applicant will join a welcoming department of 23 Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists and provide anaesthetic care for patients having surgery under a wide range of surgical specialties (excluding cardiology and cardiac surgery which is staffed separately). The Children's Hospital is part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, one of the largest foundation trusts in the country with strong links to the University of Bristol and University of the West of England.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC's Specialist Register (or to achieve it within 6 months of the time of interview by CCT or CESR) and have at least 12 months suitable Paediatric anaesthesia subspecialty experience in a recognised centre in UK or abroad.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria

Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or equivalent by date of interview

Desirable criteria

Additional Postgraduate qualification or higher academic qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria

At least 12 months suitable Paediatric anaesthesia subspecialty experience in a recognised centre in UK or abroad.

Desirable criteria

Special interest and expertise compatible with those of the existing Consultants in the Department Experience in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and anaesthesia for interventional paediatric cardiology

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria

Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the speciality of Paediatric Anaesthesia. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.

Clinical Governance & Audit

Essential criteria

Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation Positive approach to evidence based practice Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation

Research

Essential criteria

Demonstrate an interest in research.

Desirable criteria

Evidence of initiating and running research projects. Publications in peer reviewed journals.

Management & Leadership

Essential criteria

Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant Ability to practice independently as a consultant Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks

Desirable criteria

Attendance at a management training course and evidence of learning from it.

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria

Demonstrate experience in, and a willingness to continue teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates and other non-medical professionals with evidence of effectiveness.

Higher teaching qualification. Background in medical education

Interpersonal, communication & team working skills
