We are seeking to recruit fully qualified BSL/English Interpreter(s) to join the forward-thinking, innovative interpreting team in Islington.

The post is available as full time or part time.


The postholder will undertake a variety of face to face interpreting assignments across the Local Authority, the health service and other services within the borough and surrounding areas.


You are expected to have sound knowledge of issues relating to the Deaf community and a clear understanding of the role of a BSL/English Interpreter.

You must also have a willingness to continue professional development and an excellent command of written and spoken English.

You must be eligible to register with the NRCPD as a Registered Sign Language Interpreter.

You will join an established, committed and dynamic staff team, which currently consists of a Team Manager, three other part time Interpreters and three service co-ordinators.


The service is not an agency and its focus is on meeting the communication needs of the Deaf community in Islington and the surrounding area.


  • To provide a BSL interpreting service in line with the requirements and priorities of London Borough of Islington to enable Deaf residents of the Borough to access services.
  • To interpret for a variety of assignments across the health service, the Local Authority, local partners, the third sector and other services within the borough.
  • To interpret for a range of Deaf service users of all ages and with varying communication needs, including those with learning disabilities, mental health issues and those from overseas.
  • To undertake a variety of interpreting assignments appropriate to skill level, including a full range of community based assignments plus specialist domains where applicable, such as health, mental health, child protection and adult safeguarding.
  • To interpret for assignments outside of the borough of Islington where necessary.
  • Build effective relationships with Deaf service users and Officers to enable the provision of an effective interpreting service.
  • Ensure compliance of interpreting and associated tasks to internal and external quality standards.
  • Interpret conversations between Deaf members of the public and Council / NHS employees either in face to face situations, via the telephone or through the use of other technologies.
  • To work alongside other communication support personnel, for example coworking with other Sign Language Interpreters, Deaf Relay Interpreters and / or Lip speakers.
  • To engage in reflective practice regarding your performance as an interpreter.
  • To keep accurate records and other administrative tasks as required pertinent to the role.
  • Assist with developing publicity to advertise the service and arrange circulation to internal, external and voluntary sector.
  • To offer a flexible interpreting service, interpreting for appointments outside of core hours where necessary, for example morning assignments commencing before 9am and evening assignments commencing after 5pm (such as committee meetings, consultation meetings, Councillor surgeries, Council / NHS events, GP surgeries and other health appointments.
  • To provide cover in the absence of the Service Coordinators. This will involve taking booking requests from both Deaf and hearing clients and allocating inhouse or freelance interpreters as appropriate.
  • To supervise BSL/English Interpreting students from recognised Interpreter Training programmes
Developing and monitoring arrangements of service

  • To lead on and project manage a range of creative and innovative Projects in order to improve service delivery or enhance access for Deaf residents as identified by the service or the department.
  • To assist with collecting and maintaining statistics about activity and workload in line with departmental Performance Indicators as required.
  • To work in accordance with Performance Targets.
  • Contribute to Departmental policy and service development including identifying unmet need and understanding of the needs of Deaf service users.
  • Assist the Team Manager in working with commissioners to develop Sign Language Interpreting Services across the borough, to identify and meet the needs of Sign Language users.
  • Advise internal and external colleagues on access and consultation methods.
  • Advise internal and external colleagues on ways in which communication with Deaf people could be improved.
  • To keep abreast of relevant legislation, guidance, and best practice for the specific user group.
  • Assist the Team Manager to liaise with local and national voluntary and statutory organisations to assist in identifying need in relation to the provision of sign language services.
