This post provides an opportunity to progress from a Band 4Technician to a Band 5

Technician, after completing a training and competencyframework over a maximum period of 2 years. For the 2 year training period youwill be paid 70% of the top of the Band 5 pay scale in year one and 75% of thetop of Band 5 pay scale in year two. On successful completion of the training,the pay reverts to the bottom of the Band 5 pay scale and you will work throughthe pay grades as normal.

There is also an opportunity to transferdirectly onto the Band 5 pay scale for those applicants with the relavantqualifications , experience and competencies.

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will be based at either DarlingtonMemorial Hospital or University of North Durham but will be expected to coverroles at the other hospitals, as and when the need arises, on a rotationalbasis. You will also participate in the provision of our 7 days service.

You will work under the management of the Lead PharmacyTechnicians to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained across ouroperational services, including dispensary, ward services, stores, asepticservices, procurement and medicine safety.

After relevant training or depending on experience you willwork at ward/pharmacy level to deliver a patient focused, high quality serviceincluding:

Medicine history and reconciliation, providing medicinesadvice to patients, as well as other healthcare professionals and preparationof discharge prescriptions

Acting as an Accuracy Checking Technician and beresponsible for the final check of prescriptions that have been professionallychecked by a pharmacist as outlined in departmental SOPs.

Participating in the monthly co-ordinating rota

Band 4 Training Technician Role includes:

Participation in rotational training to demonstratecompetencies against a CDDFT Training Framework in:

Commencement and completion of an Accredited AccuracyChecking Training Programme, if not already achieved.

Undertaking the day-to-day supervision of pharmacyassistants, student technicians and work experience students and participate intraining and induction of these staff , where requried.

Band 5 Senior Technician Role includes:

Provision of a medicines reconciliation service todesignated wards and community hospitals. This will include compilingmedication histories by checking with patients, patients GPs (including theSummary Care Record), patients notes and other appropriate sources ofinformation.

Providing a medicines management service to designatedwards, including the ordering and issue of relevant drugs. This includes theresponsibility for the assessment of prescriptions or inpatient medicinescharts for completeness and legality, highlighting any problems to thepharmacist or medical staff.

Supporting the nursing and ward staff in the delivery ofan effective and efficient medicines management service and participatingactively in ward and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Assessing patients own drugs (PODs) for re-use inaccordance with Trust criteria.

Working alongside the ward pharmacists in planning andprioritising workload to ensure a timely and efficient medicines managementservice is provided.

Providing advice to patients on the use of the medicationsand to ensure they understand why they are taking their medication to aidcompliance.

Undertaking six monthly stock reviews and controlled drugaudits with senior nursing staff to ensure that stock levels are at anappropriate level and ensure safe and secure handling of medicines.

Acting as an Accredited Accuracy CheckingTechnician. The post holder will be responsible for the final check ofprescriptions, that have been professionally checked by a pharmacist asoutlined in departmental SOPs. They will have a duty of care and professionalresponsibility to refer back to the pharmacist any prescription that requiresclarification.
