ZSL's Sustainable Business & Finance (SBF) Programme works with commercial organisations, financial intermediaries, communities, NGOs and governments to address major global challenges to land use change and biodiversity loss.

We work with all actors in commodity supply chains - from producers to buyers and investors - to achieve supply chain transparency and by integrating biodiversity impact into decision making.

We support practices which protect and enhance biodiversity and support local and indigenous communities.

Role Profile:

  • As a Sustainable Business & Finance Communications Intern on a 12month contract, you will gain indepth experience of communicating about sustainability issues, especially in relation to commodity sectors that pose the greatest risk to tropical forests. Our main audiences are the business and finance sectors, and the role will have a particular focus on ZSL's SPOTT initiative and Sustainable Business & Finance advisory services. You will also gain experience of conducting environmental, social and governance (ESG) assessments of companies, which form the basis of the SPOTT platform. Your role will be key in supporting ZSL's Sustainable Business & Finance team to raise the awareness of ESG risk exposure in the forestry and agribusiness sectors.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creating content for and running social media channels on Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Research and report writing on ESG issues for ZSL technical reports, blog posts and other media targeted towards the business and finance sector
  • Producing training materials for the SPOTT Training Hub
  • Analysing trends in SPOTT data for internal and external communications
  • Updating the SPOTT website, and monitoring web and social media analytics
  • Preparing newsletters and press releases
  • Conducting assessments of natural rubber, timber & pulp and palm oil companies according to the SPOTT indicator framework.
  • Supporting ZSL on various tasks related to our advisory service offering to commercial clients, relating to ESG risk assessment and mitigation.


There is scope for training in any of the above areas as necessary, to be discussed with the line manager.


Person Specification:

Knowledge

  • An understanding of sustainability issues in the palm oil, timber and pulp, natural rubber or other tropical agricultural commodity sectors (desirable).
  • Understanding of sustainable agricultural practices, issues and concerns (desirable).
  • Understanding of CSR and corporate sustainability reporting best practice (desirable).

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience/interest in communicating sustainability/conservation messages to different audiences and/or through different media.
  • Passionate about engaging business and finance sectors to conserve biodiversity.
  • Excellent research and data management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An ability to manage and respond to competing priorities and diverse research needs.
  • Welldeveloped skills in using MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working proficiency in relevant languages (Bahasa Indonesia, Malay, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and/or Mandarin) (desirable).
