Job summary

We are seeking to recruit 2 locum Consultant Anaesthetist to join our department at Charing Cross Hospital.

The successful candidate will provide clinical services in anaesthesia, perioperative care, attending theatre and pre-operative assessment clinics as part of a team-based approach for adult patients. An on call commitment exists and is on a 1:15 rota.

Charing Cross Hospital is a busy teaching hospital and regional/national referral centre for several surgical specialties, including neurosurgery, head and neck cancer, airway surgery, plastic surgery, major urology and complex colorectal surgery. In addition we have one of the busiest mechanical thrombectomy for stroke services in the UK.

Applicants should be on the Specialist Register with a CCT in Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of gaining a CCT.

Main duties of the job

The jobs are paid as 10 PA per week for a whole-time contract - 9 DCC and 1 SPA.

9 PA per week of clinical activities including - pre-operative assessment clinics, elective and emergency theatre work, peri-operative medicine including acute pain and MDT meetings and on-call activity ( PA).

Work will mostly be spread over the five weekdays, but may include weekend or evening work.

1 PA per week of Supporting Professional Activities - including audit, clinical governance, teaching, research, educational supervision of junior staff and CPD.

On-call will be at the Charing Cross site and is on a 1:15 rota. This is remunerated as with an on call supplement of 3%.

Job responsibilities

The post holders will work a 10 PA contract based at Charing Cross Hospital, joining an on-call rota set at 1:15.

We are looking for outstanding anaesthetists with significant experience in our major sub-specialties including neuro-anaesthesia, urology, major robotic surgery, regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics, colorectal surgery, perioperative medicine, and head and neck/airway anaesthesia.

The successful applicant will become part of our busy department. The workload demands a flexible and responsive service to both emergency and elective work within the operating theatre environment, emergency department and in remote sites including MRI, CT and interventional radiology.

In addition to a broad range of both elective and emergency clinical work, the post-holder will have ample opportunity to be involved in research, teaching and training, governance and leadership opportunities, as well as QI projects.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

GMC registered Medical Practitioner Minimum 6 months experience in Anesthesia in the UK Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent. GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential

Advanced Anaesthetic training in subspecialty areas relevant to job plan Able to take responsibility for clinical care of complicated patients for major surgery Training and or significant experience in the management of patients for emergency surgery in the sub-specialty areas undertaken by the Trust including Neurosurgery and ENT IT Skills and computer literacy

Leadership/ Management Skills

Essential

Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions and exert appropriate authority. Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues. Management of staff.

Teaching & Training

Essential

Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff

Audit

Essential

Understanding of principles of clinical audit.

Academic achievements including publications

Essential

Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Language

Essential

Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfill the job requirements.
