Job summary:

HMS RALEIGH is the initial training establishment for ratings of the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary. It is situated on the outskirts of Torpoint, a town on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall. HMS RALEIGH consists of 6 training schools (Ph- 3) and 2 operational units.

The armoury is used extensively by all schools and units providing Ph1, 2 and 3 training in addition to the operational units.

The department provides Small Arms Weapon support for all Operational and non-Operational outputs at HMS RALEIGH.

The Armourer's roles are demanding and requires constant and consistent attention to detail and honed decision-making regarding maintenance, defect rectification and fault analysis

Primary purpose :

Issue, receipt, servicing and maintenance of all Small Arms Weapons In accordance with Policy and Procedures for Armourers Army Equipment Support Publications (AESP) 1000-A which is the documentation all Armourers/Maintainers use for work related to Weapons/Optics, under supervision of ARM 1.

Job description:


The Armourer (small arms maintainer) is under the line management of the Establishment Security Officer and is a sub department of the Executive team at HMS RALEIGH.


The Armourer is responsible for the issuing and return of weapons from the armoury, and for servicing and maintenance of all service weapons in accordance with (iaw) the relevant Army Equipment Support Regulations (AESP).

To inspect, repair and maintain weapons to the level three standard, and be jointly responsible for the security of all weapons and ancillary holdings and produce inspection and failure reports (in accordance with current issue of Armourers Policy and Procedures, AESP 1000-A

To assist with the planned inspection and quality control programmes, and the production of AF G 351 (Small Arms Inspection reports) in accordance with the standards detailed in the equipment AESP, and the current issue of Armourers Policy and Procedures, AESP 1000-A

The Armourer maintains the Small Arms Register (RN Form S3016) accurately and be the Joint Asset Management and Engineering Solutions (JAMES) Equipment Manager and Repair Manager for all Small Arms and Optical Sights held by the establishment

In conjunction with the ERO/PW1, monitor, assess and adjust, as required, Small Arms and equipment holding in relation to the training requirement.

To ensure the safe custody of outside unit and private weapons and the maintenance of a separate S3016 custodial Small Arms Register.

To produce a weekly quality control report to the Explosive Responsible Officer (ERO) & PW1, detailing the state of repair of all holdings including availability of weapons fit for purpose.

Assist with the accounting and stores procedures for weapon spare parts and maintain adequate levels for equipment held and their usage.

Provides advice to instructors and students on equipment maintenance.

Is the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) and Workplace Supervisor (WPS) for all weapon and sighting systems in the unit.
