To provide a range of support services and ancillary duties as allocated by qualified nursing staff to support patients, carers and colleagues.

Additional duties specific to HCA level III

Prepare and undertake agreed clinical activities with patients:

  • Check position of tube, prepare and administer enteral feeds (which only contain foodstuffs) where there is a naso-gastric tube or PEG in situ**:
  • Undertake capillary blood sugars**:
  • Carry out aseptic procedures
  • Undertake simple dressings and obtain wound swabs
  • Remove sutures, clips and staples
  • Perform female/male catheterisation**:
  • Perform endotracheal suction for permanent and established tracheostomies
  • Undertake venepuncture**:
  • Attach patients to cardiac monitors and obtain a reading
  • Limb observation
  • Prepare patients physically for investigation, anaesthesia, surgery and specialist interventions
**On completion of relevant Trust package.


Escort patients to and from relevant departments, including the operating department, with the joint agreement of the HCA, registered nurse on the ward and in recovery.

This excludes patients following neurological investigations.

  • Assist in delivering a high standard of holistic care to patients, promoting their equality and dignity at all times.
  • Assist with patient hygiene, mobility, physical comfort, eating and drinking, whilst observing and reporting specific changes.
  • Undertake last office procedure and provide support for the family/friends.
  • Perform and report clinical observation of a patient's temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, peak flow and oxygen saturation. Obtain measurement of a patient's height and weight.
  • Observe and report changes in patients' conditions to the Registered Nurse or team or shift Co-ordinator.
  • Obtain urine, stool and septum specimens and perform urinalysis.
  • Perform basic life support and give assistance to professionals during advanced life support techniques.
  • Routine and post arrest check of resuscitation, oxygen and suction equipment.
  • Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist in the maintenance of ward cleanliness.
  • Assist in the maintenance of stock levels.
  • Transport blood and blood products.
  • Administer suppositories, pessaries and prepared enemas.
  • Remove urethral catheters.
  • Remove peripheral intravenous cannulae.
  • Enter data onto HISS system
  • Undertake a patient's basic admission procedure in preparation for professional assessment.
  • Give formal verbal/written handover of patient care.
  • Prepare and restore environments for clinical procedures.
  • Support professionals with clinical activities.
