Ranger - Coniston

Summary
We have an opportunity for a Ranger to join our South Lakes countryside team to help us manage our 4000ha estate.
As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.
It’s an exciting time to join the team, in a varied role that will allow you to use your conservation, access and visitor engagement experience to deliver high quality land management, conservation, access and presentation standards across our land.
This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. You'll work 1950 hours per year.
What it's like to work here
Reporting to the Area Ranger, you’ll be based from our office in Coniston in the heart of the Lake District. You'll be part of our strong, dynamic countryside team of 25, working in a supportive environment helping one another across the portfolio. We care for some of the most spectacular and iconic parts of the Lake District (UNESCO World Heritage Site) around Coniston, Little Langdale and Hawkshead. Our 4000ha countryside estate is a diverse range of habitats from woodlands and wood pasture to peatland and upland habitats.
?The portfolio has strong ties to Beatrix Potter, her beloved Hill Top House, and legacy of land, farms, buildings, artwork and Herdwick sheep. This includes the popular visitor destinations of Wray, Hill Top House, and the iconic Tarn Hows, which together welcome over 450,000 visitors a year.
What you'll be doing
As Ranger you'll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, boundaries, and access infrastructure. With an eye for detail, you’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. One day you could be repairing a fence on the shores of Coniston Water, the next planting trees on the fells above Little Langdale.
You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm for this landscape and build long lasting relationships with our farm tenants, local communities, and visitors, letting people know about the work you and the team are delivering and facilitating opportunities for them to get involved.

Who we're looking for
We’d love to hear from you if you’re:
- practically experienced in conservation work to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
- experienced in managing land for access with high standards of presentation and an eye for detail in your practical work
- confident leading volunteers and talking to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
- organised, able to work independently and prioritise your work
- hard-working, willing to learn and be part of a team
